    5:05 Wolv – 1pt win Barbelo @ 7/2 (general)
    7:10 Wolv – 1pt win Loveheart @ 16/1 (general – bigger on exchanges)

    Total staked 2pts

Ado McGuinness had strong claims with Eglish in the Ladbrokes ‘Play 1-2-Free’ On Football Handicap, but the hat-trick seeking filly has had to stay home due to the stormy weather. That opens the way, it would appear for Sound Mixer, but while she can be marked up in theory for her latest run off a slow pace at Newcastle, I’m not sure William Haggas’s filly was putting it all at the finish, and I’m not certain she’ll do better at this trip, although that’s the general opinion. The fact that she’s been in headgear since debut is hardly encouraging for her development either. Preference is for Barbelo (5:05 Wolverhampton) who ran well on her second start to be third, clear of the rest, in a 6f event here behind Will To Win. That gelding defied a mark of 90 to being up a four-timer at Lingfield on Saturday, and Barbelo gave him first run when beaten 1¾ lengths here.

Barbelo was getting weight as a filly from the penalised Will To Win, but a mark of 67 still looks very feasible for her, and a defeat at Southwell since came when eased after her chance had gone over a trip too short, and having raced on the slower part of the track than the pair who beat her. The step up to seven furlongs will suit on pedigree and on how she’s been shaping, and she looks excellent value to turn over a false favourite.

Backing Michael Bell-trained runners in handicaps after a break has been a profitable strategy over the past year, and the beautifully bred Loveheart (7:10 Wolverhampton) is likely to be cheery ripe for her return given how important a win, even in this modest company, would be to her owner/breeders, Lordship Stud. By Dubawi out of Oaks heroine Love Divine, she is a half-sister to a Classic winner in Sixties Icon, and would be a very valuable broodmare if only she could win a small race. Her best effort last year came on her debut, and while she failed to improve in handicaps, she was immature and weak.

Given time to strengthen up since last seen in the summer, she won’t have to improve much to take advantage of a mark of 54, and it would be no surprise to see her packed straight off to the breeding shed should she win here.

  3. On a quiet day
Does any1 have any thoughts on Native River running in the Grand National
Heard a few times now that Tizzard wants to go for it but the owners of the horse aren’t as keen
Can’t find any real quotes looking online
He’s defo regressed from winning a gold cup now for me but can see placing if the ground’s right for him maybe staying on to 4th again
But id be thinking he’d be going very close in a National, getting weight, racing prominent and most likely on soft ground possibly heavier
    it’s whether he’s guna run
    16/1 NRNB now
Was 25/1 before the weekend with Hills but that wasn’t NRNB and that’s gone anyways
if he’s there on the day he’s placing at least and is sub 10/1 surely

    1. Yep, I think you’ve got that spot on – I think Colin is keen but connections not so much and as I come to think of it, I can’t recall seeing those colours over the national fences ever but I could be wrong – they obv don’t like it for various reasons.

If he lines up, and provided he’s not tailed off in GC (although may be a blessing) then I suspect he’d be 8s/6s I suspect if lining up at Aintree, esp if on soft side. He’s 10 now and you’d have to think it’s this season or never. Provided the fences don’t scare him/he completes, you’d be shocked if he was out of the places and he’d go close you would think. He’s still got plenty of spark left for me. If this year’s GC is a bog, and who knows, he will be in there pitching over the last couple.

      1. how strange the day i put this up the owners have spoke
Unless they already had but i hadn’t seen
Just reading on ATR app now that if he makes it round in the Gold Cup then he wont run in the National
