  • Is quiet in here today. Anyways…. no jumps tips from me today. Is not that I don’t have any it’s just that the few I have are way too short in the market. Not the most competitive of days on the racing calendar. AW is a little better.

  • Quite on here so found a article on the Racing Post which in my view is quite alarming from my old mates BHA.
Andrew Balding on pulling the plug on Apprentice’s after BHA rule change, a great tradgy when andrew has been a master at bringing the young lads through on a regular basis to the highest level in the sport.
His letter to the BHA is printed in full and their is support from Richard Hannon, Richard Farhy and many more trainers, who claim the BHA do not listen! what a surprise.
    Sadly well worth a read.

    • Maybe I’m interpreting it wrong but isn’t it a good thing that apprentices are getting paid a fairer wage. Trainers already gain an advantage by using jockeys with a claim never mind pocketing 50% of their riding fee and 20-50% of their prize money.
I’ve read articles and blog posts from jockeys themselves about how hard it is to get by as a jockey, must be even harder if you’re only getting paid half a wage. Seems like trainers want to have their cake and eat it.

      • Sorry other way around, 50% prize money and 20-50% riding fee

      • Hi Mike
That was my initial view however in all walks of life an apprentice is paid a low wage, one aspect he or she is learning the trade off the boss in this case the trainer, so does the trainer lose 50% and does he start charging the apprentice.
        For his time and experties
Apprentice more than likely will have free accomodation and food
Free travel to the races does the trainer start charging the apprentice petrol money.
Apprentice will probably be paid for exercising horses on the gallops not sure about this one, and the apprentice maybe able to freelance to another trainer to exercise there horses on the gallops.
Sure there will be many more benefits the apprentice will have which i have not covered, doubt very much the trainer will be in profit with this new arrangement if it happens, and for how many apprentices make it to a decent level will be few compared to the amount who try, for myself cannot see how the trainer can have his cake and eat it.
        Colin.

        • Yeah in theory it sounds good but as stated in the article some jockeys were not getting the expenses owed to them, at least this way they’re guaranteed a fairer wage even if they have to pay for their own fuel and kit. I don’t imagine it costs that much to feed a jockey anyway. ;P

          • Wow you really do not want to see the trainers view, you only mention food try renting in Newmarket or Lambourn/Newbury which you ommited accomodation, or the cost of the trainers time and experience he passing on to the apprentice.
