Three Chase Eye-Catchers from last week >>>
20th Nov: 2.50 Chepstow
Shaughnessy (6YO/Oliver Sherwood)
This young/unexposed chaser made a pleasing start to his fencing career here I thought. He travelled well near the front end for a long way, ahead at one stage down the back before turning for home. I was impressed with how he jumped albeit it was slightly out to the right at times and maybe he’s worth a go the other way. He visibly tired up the home straight on his first run in 227 days but plugged on, the front three some way clear.
Some of his hurdles form reads well enough and suggests a mark of 115 (may be dropped) should be well within reach. He should make a much better chaser. He finished behind a couple at Exeter in a novice hurdle who’ve won since and have ratings in the low 130s. The two in front of him at Ffos Las have won six between them since.
Looking at Oliver Sherwood’s stats… with 6 Year Olds / Handicaps/ Chases / 1-2 Runs Prev 90 Days…
27 bets / 8 wins / 13p / 30% sr / +25 SP / +38 BFSP / AE 1.45
With any luck Shaughnessy can add to those stats on his next two starts over 3m or so, and possibly RH.
21st Nov: 3.20 Wincanton
Locker Room Talk (6YO/Nigel Twiston-Davies)
This horse just needs to learn how to settle/race. I’m not 100% sure as to the strength of his hurdles form but he gives the impression that his current mark shouldn’t be a hindrance when he grows up mentally – maybe he never will, but this run was impressive enough, on just his 2nd chase start. I think he may have to go RH but he showed speed here, and his jumping was impressive for one so inexperienced. He did over-race again- i’m not sure he’s ever settled as yet – but plugged on and still finished off his race. I suspect his best trip may be over 2m4f+ (2nd in a point/related to 2m4f+ chasers) but it’s no surprise they’re running him over shorter/faster pace to try and get him to drop his head. Whether he does so may be crucial to his success over fences. Jack Savage has ridden him on all his to date and maybe getting Sam on may help.
He’s yet to race on anything worse than Good really so it could be the ground is important. I could see him doing well at a Ludlow, or a Perth. It will all click at some stage over fences and there could be a fair amount of progress when he does. Like the horse above it looks like connections like to race him prominently, which is always a positive over fences. Having said that of course, it could be that he will settle when getting a lead/faster pace to aim at. His jumping should help in that regard – holding a position.
22nd Nov: 2.40 Ascot
Sky Pirate (6YO/Jonjo O’Neill)
Another 6 year old chaser and a more obvious one I suppose (I suspect he’s been in many a notebook for a while). He’s now 0/7,3p over fences but there’s no doubt he’s very well handicapped and he will be winning a chase or two when it all clicks.
He returned at Wetherby where he was cruising when coming down 4 out, when 2L down. He was chasing Crievehill there who’s since franked the form at Haydock. He may have beaten him there, or in any case would have been a valiant 2nd. He then ran at Ascot where I’m not sure the ground was ideal. In any case Junior was very patient on him, which made sense. They clearly wanted to get him jumping/completing his race – he was a bit scratchy early and did jump out to his left at times. However he moved into the race like a well handicapped one. Alas Flying Angel had got away on the front end and was much better suited to conditions.
I hope they may try racing him more prominently now he’s got that experience under his belt. He doesn’t run keenly to my eyes. I’m not sure i’d want to see him in a big field until getting a chase win on the board and it could be he’s best left-handed/on decent ground. (not soft+ anyway)
Another who should be winning sooner rather than later and it could well be on his next start given that…
Jonjo O’Neill / Handicap Chase/ Age 6 / 3rd start in last 90 days / 10/1< / 2014>
45 bets / 14 wins / 22p / 31% sr / +18 SP / +22 BFSP / AE 1.51
That’s all for this week,
