5.05 Wetherby – COOL MIX  – 1 point win – 9/1 (coral/Ladb) 8/1 (gen) UP

as of 08.55, write up…

This horse made his chase debut on this card last year, where he ran well, bumping into a 136 horse Nicky Henderson horse. The previous Oct he was a ‘running on’ third in a maiden hurdle on return making me think they can get him ready first time up. The yard can ready them, are in good form, have booked a top jockey and return to this same meeting where he ran well last year- all making me think he could be ready to go here – and at 8s generally i’ll roll the dice. This horse is 1/6,3p over fences and is generally consistent – having watched his runs back from last season where he came second a few times, in general it was a case of ‘bumping into one’ on a few occasions and he has won x3 in his career so far, so no concerns there. This is only his second handicap chase and there should be more to come this season. Jardine is 6/24,9p, +14 with his 7YO handicap chasers in the last 5 years, 1/1 at the track. And he’s 2/3,2p with all chasers here.

He’s a strong traveller who may appreciate this trip and race set up – they shouldn’t hand around here. His jumping was generally decent enough last season and I can see him cruising into this.

The Flying Portrait is a main danger and he won this last year, but he is open to attack from unexposed legs – but they may not be a1 etc. The Hobbs horse is a clear danger but short enough I think, albeit he won first time up last year in a novice hurdle, and his owner/rider is much improved.

Yorkist may run well, and hacked up, beating The Flying Portrait, on his return last season at Aintree, after 500+ days off – so, he could be a danger from team Skelton – he is a 27 raced 11 year old though and if I can make a case for younger legs, I will – but this could be his ‘Gold Cup’ for the year, esp if they feel its the best time to catch him.

I was happy to leave the rest for various reasons.

Really Super… hmm, a poor run really and I won’t go looking for excuses – there wasn’t much in the tank for whatever reason when Jack asked her to pick up. She completed and she jumped well, which is a positive of sorts. Maybe her course of antibiotics took the edge off for this run, as it did at Leicester in her juvenile days. I can’t have that as her running anyway, so back to the drawing board. Jack said she never got into a gallop around there, was constantly changing legs and never balanced – maybe she was just unhappy, but the ground certainly wasn’t a problem. Onwards and upwards – at least she’ll be dropped again, and she has chases in her when it all clicks.

  • I’m going to Wetherby. All tips appreciated.

Has backing Phil kirby blind been successful in the last couple of years or so? Obviously focused angles should be better!

    • Just a caveat about P A Kirby, Chris, he is on the “cold list” at present, 56 runners since he had a winner and the 2 at Hexham on Saturday both finished stone last!

        • Haha, every day’s an education in these parts!! 🙂
A further caveat to that, is that he is very much geared up to winter jumps game, most of his horses are winter jumpers, and I wouldn’t want to conclude just yet that the yard have issues etc. Many of those runners could just be badly handicapped horses. You would want to see some placed efforts mind before being able to back with any confidence as there could be deeper problems.

  • Josh read your comments about Really Super hope she has not fell out of love with racing, for had a share in one with Tony Carroll and she won 3 races out of 5 and improving all the time, strong talk from Tony about running at next years Cheltenham Festival, sadly after the break she went backwards so no Cheltenham only Kuwait for her.

    • Hard to tell, I hope not. Her sires offspring can go downwards from aged 7 onwards.
She wasn’t out of love with it 3 starts ago. Obvs she had problems two starts back, there’s a chance she was mentally remembering that and we could be in trouble if so.
She was showing all her usual enthusiasm at home etc.
      Could be she’s a spring/summer horse etc.
From what Jack said sounds like she was never fully enjoying herself.
But Amy and team will find the key.
