Jumps Big Race Tips

2.40 C –

Wenyerreadyfreddie – 1 point win – 5/1 (gen) PU, never looked happy, didn’t jump that well surprisingly for me, maybe he does have to lead, took off too early at one, landed on it, and looked to have hurt himself given how he dropped out. Hopefully the day improves.

3.15 C –

Lungarno Palace – 1 point win- 12/1 (gen) 4th , ran ok.

Golden Birthday – 1 point win-16/1 (gen) Fell at last when leading, painful, 16s>8s, he hadn’t been asked a question, would have been 2nd at worst, and a battle with the winner. I’ll never know. Ah.

4.25 C –

Sir Ivan – 1 point win – 16/1 (bet365/BV) , 14/1 (gen) UP

5.00 C –

Allelu Alleluia – 1 point win – 5/1 (gen) PU, poor. I could have had 4 goes at that race and not sure i’d have landed on Skelton’s, didn’t think he’d been shaping as if he would stay that trip but a race when the rest haven’t probably run their race, but he’s bolted up

Wenyerreadyfreddie –

He’s one of those price points in an 8/9 runner field I may forever be agonising about and i’ve two at 5s today, but if they do what I think they could, then 5s will look generous enough. This horse needs decent ground and you can only assume he’s been aimed at this. He hits my meeting pointers above, has a decent record fresh, and has some very good form to his name. I don’t think a mark of 148 is near his ceiling yet. Those Ascot performances were superb – esp the second of those where he must have lost 10L+ on the way round, jumping left. He still managed to stay on and beat Kildisart, giving him weight. That horse ran well in the JLT and bolted up at Aintree off top weight in a handicap. I think the ground went for him at Newbury, and in any case i’m not sure he quite stayed. There is a niggle about whether he’ll get up this hill but he wasn’t stopping in those Ascot wins, and he’s related to a few stayers. Henderson is 1/6,3p in the race and he’s the one I wanted onside. He’s a superb jumper at his best and could be some sight around here. He doesn’t have to lead and no horse should dominate this without doing too much, but he should be up there in the right spot. Hopefully he switches off and relaxes, as he’ll go very close if he does.

I can’t have Mister Whitaker at his price given recent runs, the wheels appear to have fallen off and CP strikes of desperation. He can beat me, it would be nice for him to bounce back at some stage. I’d like to think mine is better handicapped than Highway One O One, based on the form through Kildisart, but of course handicap marks mean sod all if mine doesn’t get up the hill/run his race. He’s a danger but has had a few hard runs now. He will like the ground. I can leave Rene’s Girl at 7/2, that felt about right. She isn’t the biggest to my eye and it’s her first run around here. 7/2 feels short enough for a first time chaser around here. 5s is a tad more acceptable, just! I was happy to leave the rest albeit the Lee horses are of some mild interest.

3.15

Lungarno Palace – the only O’Brien horse i’ve tipped on the card and I hope i’ve landed on the right one. Nick may well have done with one of his also. As per the stats this is a meeting they target so you have to assume, in handicaps, everything is here to run the race of their lives. Whether that’s good enough time will tell but this one’s form around here 3/4 starts back is solid. Those two runs were on the old course and he runs as if he’ll appreciate this stiffer course/the longer climb to the line. I have no doubts he will get up this hill, which is a question for plenty. The ground went against him LTO, he also had CP and TT, which have been removed. The race before that was a crawl and didn’t suit him. This is only his 5th handicap hurdle. I would be surprised if he doesn’t place, with luck in running, and I suspect he’ll go very close. 12s was big enough for m to find out. He won on seasonal return in October so I won’t be using lack of fitness as an excuse, he may even be better fresh.

Golden Birthday – one from the section 1 qualifiers here, and i’ve got two Fry handicappers on side. I rather hope one of them improves on the Sean/Fry double act in the last 14 days – 4/14,7p. I’m not sure if i’ve missed an announcement but he now looks first choice jockey for the yard, or at least first refusal. This one looked intriguing at his price, given some of his form. He looks thrown in to my eyes. Well, way back in Sept 17 he destroyed an ok 14 runner Class 2 field at Newton Abbot over 22f, off the same mark. He then went into the mid/high 140s over hurdles, so connections sent him back on the flat, where he did well. They then tried chasing this season – he hosed up in some rubbish 2/3 runner races, but didn’t seem to hack chasing in a more competitive race NTO. He then ran over hurdles twice at big odds, always towards the rear – they were his 9th and 10th runs of a busy period. He then ran in a decent handicap hurdle at Newbury, in ground far too soft. He’s a good ground spring horse. However he laid up with Champ there until around 2 out, where the ground etc took it’s toll, and his 12th run 9 months or so, that’s plenty for a jumps horse/staying flat horse. The break should have done him good, and hes gone well fresh before – another of those yards, like many, where fitness isn’t a problem if they want them a1. I thought he was worth a stab.

The dangers.. well I like Rather Be on old hurdles form but I didn’t like his price. I may be wrong on that but 8s to my eyes didn’t feel overly generous – he has been trained for chasing for two seasons and you never know how they’ll cope returning to timber. He’s been an unlucky horse, he was BD over hurdles here and BD over fences three starts back -he’s run since as if that’s left a mental scar to my eyes. Anyway, Hendo does well switching chasers back to hurdles and if he got back to the level of his Aintree win for us, he’d go very close. I do have a slight niggle that there may be stronger stayers up this New course hill (a much longer run in than the old course) Gowiththeflow could be chucked in based on the Paisley Park form but he wasn’t great when last seen and is short enough. He is the proper ‘could be anything’ horse in this though. Honest Vic has the ability but is a bit of a monkey, hence the continue headgear switching.

3.50 (Daily Tip)

Bob Mahler… I really do think this one should be fav and while i’m not expecting a price collapse – indeed 7s may be generally available in the morning – i’ve done the work so i’ll post it! This one is getting better and better over fences and I really do think that if he jumps as well as LTO, and holds a position- well, nothing in here is getting up this hill as strongly in my view, not at this class. He runs as if he’s going to relish/devour this trip on this stiff New Course. If you watch his last run and Chepstow run back, he has a touch of the Takingrisks about him. Dicky is the perfect jockey for him and having gone outpaced over 2 out LTO, over 23f at Newbury, he didn’t half fly when asked. He responded to pressure well there, the front two a few lengths clear of the rest. He wasn’t stopping come the line and beat an unexposed 136 horse there. He’s only gone up 4lb – his Racing Post Rating was 137 for that run – a join career best with his chase run at Chepstow. There’s more to come from him and he could be the one open to most improvement in this, in these conditions. He has to go LH and should race prominently. He has ‘staying on’ form on good ground so I won’t use that as an excuse. If he’s bang there jumping 2 out, he’ll be the one to beat. The yard are in form, they have a decent 30% SR with LTO winners and they are 1/6 in handicap chases at Cheltenham- Missed Approach at the 2018 Festival, fondly remembered in these parts. I half expect a similar sort of performance here and i’m excited to see what he can do here. I think he’s 2/3 points too big here and he’s the one I want to be on. IF he runs his race, and improves again – which is what i expect – the rest will need to run up to a decent level. Many are up in class, a few have been whacked by the handicapper. There’s a few in-form rivals in this, some unexposed, but he’ll do for me. He looks the most interesting in here. Fingers crossed.

4.25

Sir Ivan … I couldn’t work out why he was 16s really. Yes he’s 9 (but only the 10th handicap hurdle run of his life) but the older boys have a good record in this, 9 year olds being 5/27 runners, 11p since 1999. He comes here fresh, and on the back of a decent run. He’s another Fry inmate who appeared to lose his way over fences. They gave him a break after December, returning 24 days ago – that was a very good run considering he gave the winner 18lb or so, and it was over a trip too short, but to show that relative speed is a positive. He came 2nd in this race in April 2016, which makes me think it may have been a plan since December. That day he bumped into an unexposed Nicholls horse who had 15/20lb in hand, but had the rest well beat and stayed on to the line. Sean rarely has them in the wrong place and this one should be bang there over the last couple. Whether something has more in hand we shall see – he did win a handicap chase easily off 135. This race didn’t look packed with unexposed types who could challenge, and it may be a case of who handles conditions best.

The main dangers at prices… well Nick may be spot on with Ocean Cove – he is unexposed, won a shade cosily LTO, his form is working out well, there will be more to come – the CP do need to work again, which they probably will, but he is a bit of a one paced galloper, who can be held up- now that may be just what you need today, but at 10s I was just on the fence. I did nearly throw him into the mix but thought i’d stick with just one.  I suppose First Assignment and Thomas C are obvious enough, but have never looked overpriced in this market to my eyes.

5.00

Alelu Alleluia

Well I agonised over both this one and the first tip at 5s, and we shall see if i’ve got either right. Jonjo O’Neill has won the last two renewals of this race, another from the stats pointers above also, and he’s unexposed – there is more to come over fences. Whether these conditions bring about that further improvement we shall see. This looks to have been a plan given he had a break/wind op, returned to action 27 days ago over a trip too short, without any headgear on. The blinkers return here, Junior takes off 3, and I’d like to think he’s here to run his race, which some would argue is never a given in these colours, ahem! He does run as if he’ll relish this trip and touch wood is a sound jumper. He’ll also have pace to track and this course is fair – you can make all if getting a soft lead/have the stamina, but you can come from further back. He should have the tactical speed in this and junior is proving to be an astute judge of pace so far. It could be he doesn’t take to the course, and he’s just too much of a monkey – he looked straight forward enough at Worc. I expect Jonjo to make a very late challenge, shadowing something over the last before pouncing.

Of the rest.. well I just didn’t like Rocky’s Treasure of Dingo Dollar – which in part is what made me get off the fence with the selection. The former’s jumping went to pieces LTO and it’s his first run here over fences. He shouldn’t get an easy lead here and I can’t have him. A long old season and he may want a rest now. I could be wrong. Dingo Dollar is turning into a bit of a disappointment and 7/4 was a silly silly price, he had to be taken on. He’s had a long trip to Scotland and back for the National, which he was withdrawn from, and that travelling may have taken something out of him. In any case he just wasn’t very good on his last two starts, and he won’t get an easy lead either I don’t think. He does have a nice profile, and I wouldn’t begrudge him that victory, but you’d find better 7/4 pokes on the virtual dogs I suspect!! 🙂

That leaves one for me to discuss… Perfect Candidate… I’m pleased he’s an Jumps S1, as you can make some sort of case. I have reluctantly decided to try and never back an 11 year old+ handicap chaser every again, outside of Sandown’s Vets final. He is just getting on and PU LTO- that was due to a tardy start and he never likes being held up. His run two starts back would give him a squeak – he tried to go toe to toe with Beware The Bear through the second circuit and that cost him- he did plug on. He if gets a less aggressive ride near the front he could win this – especially given I think the top 2 may not run their race, and there’s a chance mine doesn’t either – in that scenario, which isn’t impossible, he would have a massive chance if running his race. In the end i’ve gone with the younger legs – who if he’s in a challenging position over the last should have too much toe, if staying up the hill of course. PC has been backed which is interesting, maybe one last hurrah before retirement. If you don’t back jumps S1, I wouldn’t put you off a saver.

Right, that’s it, I’ve run out of time and indeed mental energy to look at Newmarket etc.

Best of luck.

  1. Thanks for these extra trainer pointers Josh, love’em as a way in, especially during the crossover between NH and flat.

      1. thanks fellas, as always a large part of what I try to do is provide some useful/unique info to use in your own punting – even more so when I can only occasionally land on a decent winner at the moment! 🙂 We shall see if those 3/5 have any winners over next two days, and whether i land on any. 2. A nice drift on Invitational out to 13/2 despite being a LTO winner. A 3 pointer Josh!!! (smiley smiley).

      FIDUX
been wanting this better ground after a lay off last time at Taunton that i feel will have sharpened him up and the soft ground not suiting before that, so, the price on offer here represents value.
      UNISON
Front runner who may get caught here, but, sometimes he finds a little bit more under pressure, will have to see if he is suited by the LH uphill finish. reason for an each way stab.
      15:50
      LITHIC
with it being a Novice chase i have to turn to the dream team of father and son at the moment and at 9/1 this is just about value, jonjo junior is turning into a hungry jockey and i feel his moment in the sun is about to begin, certainly next season will be keeping a close eye on who claims him etc. Lets hope today is another sunshine day!!
      TANARPINO
Been ultra consistent this year and although having top weight here the 11/1 general price is value i feel for one that loves this going and is progressing. Just hope the headgear inspires again.

      WHOSMYJOCKEY
Hobbs/ Dickie combination is always one to be fearful of on any given Wednesday at Cheltenham, think they can keep the combination going here, the horse should like the course and Dickie knows as well as any how to ride Cheltenham
      TOBEFAIR
finished 2nd lto in the pertemps, don`t really need much more in this lesser contest, but, if not on form hopefully my other one can fall in line!!

As always hope all horses and jockeys come back safe and sound, good luck with whatever your selections are today also!

  4. Azor Ahai Beverley 16:00 1pt e/w-20/1-I think this one has a lot going for it. He would have needed it LTO and was just outclassed in the Chesham however on his Ripon run before that he achieved some of the best speed figures of anything in the field. I think there is a decent chance he gets his own way out in front particularly as the other pace angles aren’t as well drawn or are having their seasonal re-appearance run. In the context of the race I think 20/1 is too big.
Rather Be Cheltenham 15:15 1pt e/w-8/1-Ran OK over fences over this sort of trip before not seeing out the 3m. Back over hurdles he gets to race off 8lb lower. This is his only 3rd handicap hurdle. He unseated at Cheltenham before hacking up at Aintree in a better race than this. He is only 4lbs higher here. Fits Josh’s stats and Henderson won this last year.
Ocean Cove Cheltenham 16:25 1pt e/w-10/1-Could have won as he liked LTO in first time cheekpieces. Only up 7lbs for that and the form has been franked with the 2nd and 4th both hacking up next time. Another that fits Josh’s stats. Is ground versatile and trainer thinks the world of him. Stays further which will help here and should go very close.

  6. Newer system qualifiers (can also be mentioned in qualifiers above)

Skelton, Class 1 or 2, Handicaps, absence 61+ days:

Hurdles – 3.15 CHN, No Hassle Hoff.

    Chases – 2.40 CHN, Rene’s Girl.

Christian Williams – Handicap Chasers 25F or more:

    3.50 CHN, Fifty Shades.

      1. Good stuff Martin,

as previously discussed, (and I don’t want others to be wading in 🙂 ) , the Skelton angle over fences needs monitoring, Born S was the first winner in 29 ‘qualifiers’ – it could be that he’s changed approach with those also but it makes more logical sense for why the hurdlers would do better – given what a chase can take out of you/the need to be proper fit/chasers taking longer to get fit etc – he can clearly do it, but Born S had a winning profile after breaks, so i’d treat it on a horse by horse basis. I’m not sure on what judgement you’d decide to wade in and back something systematically that ‘was’ 0/29, a few days ago, but that may just be me, and if you’ve put a belief in this being a more targeted approach now, I can see the logic, but i’d want to see a tad more life first personally. It may well be something for the spring – indeed that Ayr meeting is now clearly near the top of the target meetings i think.

Best of luck, i’m posting the hurdle selections above in test zone also, the track specific ones, but I should probably save a non-track specific one.
        Josh

I’m not sure on what judgement you’d decide to wade in and back something systematically that ‘was’ 0/29, a few days ago, but that may just be me, and if you’ve put a belief in this being a more targeted approach now, I can see the logic, but i’d want to see a tad more life first personally. It may well be something for the spring – indeed that Ayr meeting is now clearly near the top of the target meetings i think.

Best of luck, i’m posting the hurdle selections above in test zone also, the track specific ones, but I should probably save a non-track specific one.
        Josh

  11. today’s selections.
    Cheltenham.
    3-15. Le Patriote 12-1
    3-50. Lithic 9-1
    4-25. Sir Ivan 10-1
    all 1/2 pt ew

    1. ah yes, Chelt winners all over the shop, well done with Newland’s Martin, nice winner. Shame mine didn’t stand up, suspect we’d have had a battle royale to the line!

  12. Newmarket card looks very tricky. Combination of large heart bloodline pedigrees, speed figures, trainer and jockey stats required and even then may not have a winner so caution advised and use the information as you wish as these are NOT selections. I personally will be betting some and leaving others but have not decided which at the time of writing.
2.25 is a nightmare of a race to make a selection as all have very good pedigrees. Favs are 40%. It is not possible to separate them …Wild Animal, UAE Jewel, Kung Foo, and Desert Icon should be in the mix given the distance and going and pedigrees and trainers but nothing leaps out so no bet for me.
3.00. More information to go on and one horse that struck me at a price was Times Arrow. In a Group 3 race at Longchamp in Sept last year the horse ran over 7f on good ground coming seventh but ran 11.18 spf and 11.53 spf in a listed race at Maison- Laffitte in April last year…this compares with Brando which has won this race twice before running in a time of 11.85 spf at G3 level so at the prices I think this is a value bet e/w. Yafta could also run well clocking 11.64 spf. The outsider Sir Thomas Gresham is an interesting outsider having clocked two runs over the distance of 11.44 spf and 11.47 spf at a lower grade so has to cope with a class rise. The trainer is 0-0 in 4+ yo. A negative is the Jockey 0/24 on horses 4+ yo. so will be interesting to how that pans out. Favs are 42% so Brando may well complete the hatrick.
3.35. This is an interesting race with 1st and 2nd favs winning 28% and 27% respectively so we have 45% to go at. On the clock Royal Marine and Zakouski are evenly matched with 12.09 spf. The two interesting runners are Confiding, clocking 12.02 spf. and Jack Star clocking 11.98 spf. and are decent prices at the time of writing (yep, have trouble sleeping).
4.10. This is equally interesting as there are a mix of horses having run and those who have not. Favs 37% 2nd favs 19% so another 45% to go for. Of those who have had a run Handmaiden ran 12.35 spf with Clerisy clocking 12.53 spf….Pempie clocked 12.40 spf. The ex Haggas horse Queen Of Burgandy clocked 12.30 spf over 8 furlongs so may well out run the odds. Of the unraced horses all have good pedigrees but the ones that stands out for me are Ojooba and at a bigger price Gentlewoman. However, this is a fascinating race and because all the unraced horses have really good pedigrees it is extremely difficult to separate them and I would not be surprised if one of the horses I have not mentioned wins.
4.45. The two interesting horse that have run before are Doughan Alb ran 11.75 spf. in a class 5.race at Lingfield. and Vindolanda which ran in a class 4 race at Wolv. clocking 12.14.. For comparison El Misk ran 12.48 spf and Jalmoud 12.74 spf in class 4 races. Horses can improve for a run without doubt and generally speaking those that have had a run have the advantage of experience over those which haven’t so, personally I would be looking for bigger prices about those that have not run before. To be honest, anything could pop up and win. Personally, I prefer Misk to Jalmoud and the unraced 2nd string Mons Star may well surprise everyone given the excellent pedigree of the horse.
Good luck on a tricky card.

    1. That was an interesting read many thanks silver.
I only looked at the 3-00 and the 3-35 as they were the most valuable races of the day and I had brando as royal marine both top on my home brew speed/pace ratings.

    2. Appreciate your time silver in what is far from a 5 minute rundown on your selections.very good breakdown and a pleasure to read – I genunelly hope you have the best of luck

        1. SBC Southwell update

Hello GB and any other sandboys. Looks tricky tonight to me. Anyway, here we go:

6.00 – I think Motahassen is strong, however Appleby runs a danger in Quila Saeda and Panatos’ T/J are 42% win and place at Southwell over 5 years.

6.30 – Casement a good bet, Muquarrad and Mujassad the dangers to my eyes.

7.00 – my best bet of the night, Midnight Malibu. Not even having a saver! Most unlike me.

7.30 – Harbour Quay looks a worthy favourite. Saving on Luv U Whatever in view of your logic.

          8.00 – swerving this one

8:30 – Mildean Panther looks good, worried about Champagne Monday.

There we have it G. Again, not a night to raid the piggy bank for. Especially the way Cheltenham and Newmarket are going so far 🙂 🙂

    1. Hi, hmmm, well yea he’s double top rated and on last season’s advice, then yes! I’ve added it in- i’m clearly between two minds – I should probably still add the S1 and S4 – the results from last season , and the ROI, and how the the profit essentially rested on 1/2/3 winners really, has made me ponder whether they are worth bothering with – in part why i dropped them from the ‘where to begin’ updated doc for this season, and the ‘other ideas’ one (which can now be found in the Key) I think they will wipe their face at worst… what I need to do next month, when it’s quietened down a bit on the research front/isn’t so hectic, is go through them all with a 3/1< cut off say, and ES+ S3A# etc, as there's a chance they are actually decent systems if ignoring the shorties, which I doubt do better than paying for themselves. Because of those results, i was a bit on the fence about whether to 'advise' them again. I'll update the doc with all last season's strategies in asap and put that link back in the key. 🙂 As ever at this time of year, not enough hours in the day!

    happy gb 🙂

    1. Ha, well – at my best I can be different gravy in decent 3m+ handicap chases, that’s true! Lovely ride from the replacement Daryl Jacob, stormed up that hill. Got to aim him at The Welsh if not too soft, albeit ground doesn’t matter for him. Has shaped last few runs as if would do just that. 1 point profit on day assured. Would have been good if Golden B hadn’t fallen but two darts left. On we go. One more winner would make it a good day. I can hope.

    1. omg .. these doylers really can ride … i am slightly more in love with the hollie type at the moment .. 2 on the bounce for me now 😉

  22. Has anyone noticed we just missed out on a 20/1 winner by neck from Josh’s excellent Newmarket trainers list : Gentlewoman? Good work. Please keep the trainer shortlists going! 🙂

2 on the bounce for me now 😉
lets get ready to rumble tonight mr mc meister 😉 another free bets night 😉
