That’s it for tips.  It is now, apols, as I was writing up Kilcrea, i realised I should be tipping him at his price.

1.45

Well I’ve looked through the races as usual but have decided to stick to the 10/10 stats/trends shortlists today, and we shall see if that proves wise or not. I could make strong cases for those on said lists/above…

Canardier… he ran a cracker at Cheltenham on handicap debut, after a break, and it’s not impossible this has been the plan. He will have learnt plenty from that experience and he was hampered 4 out, which didn’t help. I think he could be better on decent ground, but given his run there on soft, with this less demanding finish, I though he was worth a go. He does have to back up that run, which he may not do, but 8s seemed fair.

Push The Tempo… clearly a dart and he may fall out the back of the TV. However, he’s on the trends shortlist, he’s unexposed, conditions look fine (won a PtP in heavy, albeit lucky but would have been a solid 2nd). This could have been a plan with his prep run after a break LTO and in a race that has produced 33/1-50/1 winners, I was happy to roll the dice. It may amount to little but he’s got an interesting profile and there should be more to come one day. Whether it will be at this level, time will tell.

Of the rest.. well Tedham has been backed as if defeat is out the question and 6/1< festival handicap winners will be the death of me. He fits Jonjo’s profile for the meeting – well he hits his trainers stats in the report below, and he’s unexposed, looks to have  been saved for this and could be anything. This ground/trip combo may pose a question but i’ll take him on.

Brio looks the right price. I backed him LTO and I thought he wants better ground to be seen to his best over this trip. I could be wrong and he’s a strong traveller. Nicholls has yet to improve on his woeful handicap stats here in recent years, but this one may do so.

Esprit Du Large.. he was high up on my list, in the ‘could be anything’ category, and I may have some track side change on. He hits the trends profile and is unexposed. I backed Knight In Dubai LTO also, and if he wins that would be annoying. He over-raced there a bit to my eyes and possibly hit the front too soon. He’s got questions in conditions but he’s another who’s got a nice profile. These are the two I fear I may have got wrong but I only wanted two main bets onside in this. I was happy to leave the rest for various reasons.

4.05

Blimey this race looks tough, no Ultragold this year sadly!

Forest – hits the trends profile and has experience of the fences from the Grand Sefton earlier in the season. His overall profile suggests he stays, but he seemed to stop rather quickly there. At 20s+, i’ll chance him. It could be he simply bottomed out, or there was an excuse i’m not sure. Anyway he should creep into this and he could be a better horse now, having developed in recent runs. The ground won’t be a problem for him and he looked a lively outsider. He should be thereabouts after the last, if still on his feet, and we shall see what happens after that!

Indian Temple – another trends pick. He ran 7th in this race last year, on what was officially heavier ground – i’m not sure it’s as testing as last year, but if it is, that EW bet may be out the window. He comes here after a prep run also, unlike last year, and he usually races prominently. He took to the fences well enough and I thought there was a decent chance of him being in the mix. He may not be good enough to win, or may be out-stayed but i’ll keep everything crossed that he makes the frame at worst.

Call It Magic is a worthy fav given his run in the Becher, but i’ve missed the 10s which would have been worth a go. He should go very close, but is now 5s so i’ll leave him. Solid.

Janika – well another LTO festival tip and maybe i’ll get to the end of Day 2 wishing i’d just backed them all – but he’s got a bit weight to lug around in this ground, and is 13/2 or so- that didn’t feel overly generous but he should run his race.

The two biggies that were high on my list were Flying Angel and Kilcrea Vale – the former returned to form LTO, and has experience of the fences- although went backwards in this last year, having lost a position. Maybe he was just out of form them etc, and I will have a small nibble on him just in case. IF Kilcrea is in form (and not simply out of sorts which he may be, although ground may have been an excuse LTO), and he jumps (he can hit a few and has done around here) then he will place at worst. He should go very well here and I can see the case, and if mine fluff their lines i’ll be cheering him home…. UPDATE… as i’m writing this and having looked at him again,  it has just dawned on me how solid he is in this , given his course form, and the ground has come for him. He’d have won the Grand Sefton but for a crucial error and I backed/tipped him that day. 16s is too big, and if he did win, that would be a sickener.

Right, that’s it. Of course I may not have mentioned the winner.

Aintree Day 2: Festival Through The Card

Cheltenham: +36, 1 point win

Aintree: 2/11,4p, +15

2.20 – Precious Cargo

2.50 – Lost In Translation

3.25 – Politologue

4.40 – Lisnagar Oscar

5.15 – pass 🙂

Precious Cargo – given Henderson’s record in the race I thought it interesting that he was pitched into this. Those Chelt horses had hard races. I like Itchy Feet but he can break blood vessels etc, so a concern at odds. Lost In Translation – well this is his trip I think and he ran a cracker at Chelts, esp given the horrid yard form. He runs as if he’s a 3 miler and it will be interesting to see what he does. He may be one for next year but you can see him rocking up in The Hennessy and possibly then the Welsh National say. Politogue – not a race I have strong views on – well I don’t on any of these through the card races today – but he won this last year and looks the solid one in the ground. Lisnagar Oscar- was fancied by plenty before Chelts but didn’t seem to quite get up the hill in that ground. Worth another chance at his odds in what does look an open enough race. I’ve no idea on the bumper- maybe i’ll go for Team Walsh with some track side change. Usually its a case of backing whatever Twister runs in the race, given his long term record in it, but he doesn’t have a runner this year. No real idea but hopefully we see a taking performance from something.

That’s the lot for today

  1. It looks hard on Friday at Aintree but I will have a go:

1.45 Mont Des Avaloirs, 1 point each way at 12/1. The horse steps up in distance which may help him to be competitive.
2.20 Winston C, 1 point each way at 12/1. An improving horse going up the grades. Who knows where he can get to until he loses again?
2.50 Topofthegame, 4 points if evens or better. I can see this horse going right to the top and if so needs to take this.
4.05 Janika, 2 points each way at 15/2. Although he has top weight he still has improvement in him to go beyond handicap level and so can outclass these.
4.40 Downtown Getaway, 1 point each way at 14/1. A Hendo horse that is unexposed and may be able to improve to get involved here.
5.15 Dewcup, 2 points win at 11/2. Ted Walsh does not waste money bringing horses over to the UK unless they have a chance. Ruby rides.

    Good luck.

  2. 1.45 Aintree
I’ve looked thru the stats pack for this race and after 4 x 10/10 stats and 1x 9/10 stat I’m left with three horses…

    Canardier
    Esprit Du Large
    Push The Tempo

Make of those what you will while Josh drinks himself into oblivion. 🙂

      1. Haha oh god. Apologies. I did say it was a social festival. Ill be up at 7 whatever.
The first of those… I’m sure he wants good ground but could be wrong.

    1. Esprit Du Large makes his handicap debut here and based on his form he gets in here on a reasonable mark. The stable is not in bad form and the horse should cope with the going. His price is OK and is each way value. He had a Grade 1 entry this week, so is highly thought of at home.

  3. Call It Magic Aintree 16:05 1pt e/w 8/1
    Kilcrea Vale Aintree 16:05 1pt e/w 18/1
    Human Nature @ 12/1 Leicester 16:15 1pt e/w 12/1

    1. Looking at that same Leicester race Nick I was torn between your selection Human Nature and Scofflaw.
      I’m having 1pt each.
Both are on favourable ORs and have shown their best form on turf off these marks.

      1. One more before I get ready for bed…
        4.50 Leic – Firmdecisions
Last year it ran 3 times over CD
        1st OR77
        4th OR83
        1st OR78

It’s back tomorrow over the same CD OR78 with a 3lb claimer riding.
It’s been placed to win again imho.

  11. Morning,

Well after picking the wrong one yesterday I`m not making that mistake again, especially as I really did fancy 3 in the foxhunter, need to get my focus back, if you back 3 and come out in profit…who cares, because the stats will say “profit” in the profit column….. I`ll put it down to the man flu.

    13:45
ESPRIT DU LARGE 9/1 gen 1pt win
Has been put in this instead of the grade 1 on Saturday, which to me is a tip in itself, the fancied horses do seem to struggle in this race over the years, but, he should have enough class one hopes to fend these off!
    ADMIRAL BARRATRY 25/1 gen 1pt e/w
Has been a bit of a monkey all season and i do think he could be again he, but, if onson and with cheek pieces fitted, he should hopefully come on for his last run and at 25/1 i feel is over priced.
    STERNRUBIN 25/1 gen 1pt e/w
Has been to this track a couple of times and ran twice within two days last year, to finish third in the conditional race on the Saturday after the National, so, to that end he obviously likes the track. The 28/1 / 25/1 is far too big and he represents definite value in the race.

    16:05 Aintree
    ADRIEN DU PONT 14/1 gen 1pt e/w
Cobden / Nicholls combination, any other race at any time of the year he would be far shorter than this and i think it shows the bookies don`t really know how to price this up as prices for everything are really value…
    SAN BENEDETO 20/1 gen 1pt e/w
Another Nicholls horse i hear you cry, well, if you remember i tipped this one up LTO, if his temperament holds out and he takes to these fences i think he has a cracking chance in this. His speed figures should see him finish with a wet sail, it`s just the fences that are a concern, but, at 20`s is definitely value.
    DOITFORTHEVILLAGE 25/1 gen 1pt ew
Another who i believe could actually like this tight track, still believe his previous two runs were down to others falling / unseating /diving left in front of him. We shall see, but, if everything drops right, we could see him powering on when all the others have gone out the back of the tv. if he`s in front 2 out he could be hard to pass, this course favours the brave!!

As usual hope all horses and jockeys come back safe and sound and good luck with whatever your selections are today, mind how you go!

      1. i’m not going to lie, this morning has been a struggle 🙂 But we solider on. I’ll be better behaved today! No complimentary all day bar for starters!

      1. Yea of little faith Ken, still cannot believe the price 20/1 to 8/1 takes some money on a grade 1 coarse to move the market like that in a 27 runner HC, and one bookmaker had 22/1 when put the bet up, and it was not the Ruby factor!!!
        Colin.

Happy days cannot describe the shear joy of happiness being involved in a winner on the day, it is a wonderful experience.
Cheers or is it Hic, Hic wheres the bucket Ha Ha
    Colin

    1. cheers, yep a great day had by all – wish I was more confident on him in hindsight haha – always the case. But superb for them, they and the horse deserve that. He def prefers that way round and the rain came for him. He hit a few fences also which was one of my concerns around there/speedier track, but still clung on. A decent race. They are great people, very down to earth etc. Amy had a very exciting update on Really Super also, which was pleasing to here! We should have a fun year ahead with her now.

  16. SBC Update

Morning G and anyone else listening. A frustrating night last night, with only Arlechhinos winning and Carvelas missing out on third by under a length (although you had it to fourth G). Backed from Fifties in the morning to16/1 I think, just back it next time!

Looking at Wolverhampton between Aintree races this pm let me know if you fancy owt 🙂

    1. hi mc maestro .. always listening … although thankfully no-one except for fellow learned brothers ( and sisters 😉 ) from the infamous S.B.C. battalion listens to me ..every cloud ( vintage) i suppose 😉 .

Well i ended up losing money last night but it was not that painful after you pointed me in the direction of carvelas for my 4tbp fettish ( i’d be a poor man without that facility ) – so thanks and ” still winning ” 🙂
I have listed my leicester fancies on the compo page 😉
i will be back later for any wolves qualifiers .. but not many i know that if any ? 🙁
p.s. who do you fancy for the GN ??
      gl/b 🙂

        Josh

  18. Hiya VP GB, need to look at GN although don’t like it as a betting race that much too many risks of your fancies being dicked about by clumsy and/or floundering other hosses. Unoriginal instant reaction would be Rathvinden but will look a bit more closely later. Any systems for GN?

    1. it’s weird but more the potential problems in a race the more i like it and have a medicom of success in ….. bring it on 😉

again i have national system but not totally “trimmed yet” and at the 48hr decs stage it still leaves 12 😉 …..including rathvinden !! fill ya boots 🙂 vintage clouds must run well ( if it is running ? ) captain rebeard ??? will wait for overnight decs later this afters’
      gb 🙂

    1. Just put up my competiton entrants for tonights aw for you to laugh… i mean look at 🙂
and if i have any money left in my daily kitty …i will be on :
      8.00 w CHARLIE ARTHUR ( E/W) (4TBP)

      gl/gb
p.s. well gutted just done point of principle e/w and got done on the line by that fellow magician of a trainer messrs : elliott !! ( brilliant training performance – fair play ! )
      gl/gb
p.p.s. gordon elliot must have a good chance of lifting the GN .. just not necessarily with a supposedly more fancied runner ?????????
      🙂

      1. Well one one’s gonna win it. My heart wants the tiger to roll past the post first. Would be great to see.
I’ll put my speed/findings up later today/tonight. Maybe of some use may confuse us even more 🙂

  19. COLINS BETS
No bet yesterday Aquarium 11/1 to 6/1 a tad unlucky when hampered over a furlong out and going down by an head.

    Colin

      1. Traf, sooner the better for me for it has happened on a few occasions recently, guess we forget when it does go our way.
        Colin

      2. Very unlucky I backed him at Doncaster also I think he is one for the notebook. He has a win in him

    1. Ah Bollocks!! I already had 3 in the 4.05 so didn’t do Cadmium. Great stuff Colin. Your new method is going well and Two hoots at 13/2 SP. Great day for you.

      1. Yea of little faith Ken, still cannot believe the price 20/1 to 8/1 takes some money on a grade 1 coarse to move the market like that in a 27 runner HC, and one bookmaker had 22/1 when put the bet up, and it was not the Ruby factor!!!
        Colin.

        1. and to crown a terrific day, Vampish goes in at 11/2 SP. Well deserved Colin after so many close losers.

    2. all hail …………… the mighty C Leafe 😉

  20. 5.15 Aintree No 8 Thebannerkingrebel – 14/1 e/w (4 places)

He’s had wind problems and was operated on last year and had tidy up work done this year.

The stable think he could be the best horse they have in the yard.

  21. Josh
Enjoyed the pictures from Aintree of Amy Murphy and yourself and the rest of the gang.

      Josh

  23. LAMBOURN TRAINERS
yesterdays only runner Whatswrongwithyou well backed down to 7/1, for me very novicey and struggled against the seasoned jumpers, Nicky Henderson will win a decent prize with him before the seasons end.
    Aintree
2.20 Rouge Vif BOG 8/1 Harry Whittington, going up another grade, feel he will run well
2.50 Mr Whipped BOG 10/1 NH Quite fancy him to go very close, to be honest.
4.05 Kilcrea Vale BOG 16/1 NH the ground will suit and i think he has a great chance under his featherweight 10st!
4.05 Janika bog 13/2 NH I’m quite hopeful of a bold show
    Leicester
5.25 Saikung BOG 6/1 CH her work has been pleasing and she should go close today.

    Colin

  24. Well I’ve just done Topville Ben done on the line for 2nd! Nice 22/1 EW too 🙁

  25. SBC Update

Morning G and anyone else listening. A frustrating night last night, with only Arlechhinos winning and Carvelas missing out on third by under a length (although you had it to fourth G). Backed from Fifties in the morning to16/1 I think, just back it next time!

  26. SBC Wolverhampton update

Afternoon G and other aficionados of the sand.

Wolverhampton bets, although have to say none with massive confidence so small stakes.

5.30 Poetic Principle EW, trainer thinks it will outrun its odds. Also Mansfield, a Silly Boys nap.

7.00 going with your selection, Peckinpah, although form hard to quantify.

8.00 Cannot see beyond the favourite, trainer extremely keen.

Saving with a shortie trixie, Kraka, Badenscoth (7.00, Mr Ivory) and Rhossili Down 8.00.

To be honest only very silly boys will be playing at Wolverhampton tonite. Got the GN list yet Gmeister?

    🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. Here they are then by popular demand or at least mc anyhow 😉 the cheeky little rascals who haven’t managed to slip through gb’s net !!

  30. Terribly sad about forest des aigles. He jumped supremely and would have had a massive say in the finish. From the joys to connections of him potentially winning a huge pot to that tragic end, difficult to stomach.

Well done Colin, the majority of the rest of us can’t manage a winner between us, I certainly can’t back one!
