Daily Tips

2.20 Newb – Calivigny – 1 point win – 9/1 (gen) UP 10/1, hmm a nothing run there really, travelled ok, didn’t do much up the straight. The winner returned a nice price in the end, 8/1, 4/1-9/2 in the morning which didn’t seem generous to me for a 5 race chase maiden but she was unexposed over fences, entitled to that on hurdles form, ran ok two starts ago and not beaten far LTO, and yard going well. One you’d be annoyed at not considering at 8s, but I can live with the decision on morning odds.  Felt an open enough race, she’s done it well. Master Burbidge ran well in 2nd at 14s, jumped much better, 2m4/5f may be as far as he’d want, but he’s got a small handicap chase in him on that evidence.

I’ve given myself some creative licence with this ‘long distance’ handicap chase, but I thought this one was interesting at the price, and the overpriced one in this. In part I think he’s one of not many in this likely to run their race and he hasn’t run badly all season. He’s either been winning or staying on at the line on his last 4 starts and his Kelso run was decent – he beat a 118 rated chaser there, who then won his next start impressively off 122 and while it’s northern form, it’s some of the better recent form in this. This horse generally jumps well, touch wood, travels well, and he tries. If he runs his race he’ll be staying on best at the end and I hope the 425 mile trip is worth it – it’s an awful long way to come with just the one runner and the trainer sounds confident of a good run on his blog, and reports him to be full of beans at home still. I did note that he’s 3/4,3p when carrying 10-9 or less on his back and it could be he doesn’t like carrying big weights – he ran well LTO off 11-12, held up too far back, but staying on again up the Carlisle hill, but that was a hard task given that weight/his weight carrying profile. I do think he could still have a few pounds in hand and while he’s 10 he is consistent and there was nothing in here on the more unexposed end I liked at the prices.

The fear is that, as with Ayr two starts back, he gets taken off his feet if they go hard early here. The first few fences/2-3f will be key here I think – I hope they try and race him handier over this trip, which they’ve done before, and if he’s comfortably holding a position, he should be thereabouts over the last fence. If he does get tapped for toe, as long as he can stay in touch there’s a chance he picks them up late and hold up chasers have a good enough record over this CD. The track shouldn’t be a problem.

The dangers… Master Burbidge is the one at 12s who I fear having got wrong, and I contemplated tipping him but in the end it was his jumping that put me off – IF he has a clear round here, he could go very close and maybe 12s was worth the risk. However he made two howlers LTO, the second of which cost him his chance. I suspect he’d have been running on into 2nd but for that, and would probably be 7s or so here if he had. That’s not the first chase where his jumping has lacked fluency but I may have some change on just in case I’ve got him wrong.

Of the rest… well I started with Tanit River but was talking myself out of him before he was scratched. The fav is a maiden and a silly price, as I don’t like how he responds to pressure, I think he’s a monkey who wears the visor for a reason, and his effort when headed LTO was abject. He will travel like the winner on the front end and maybe his finishing effort has been down to yard form, rather than himself. I don’t think so on the evidence available but the King yard are going better now. However,  for an 11 race maiden who’s up in class, and has questions over his resolve, I can leave 2/1. If it all clicks and he takes this, so be it, but he’s the sort of 2/1 shot you have to be taking on in my view.

I was happy to leave the rest. Le Boizelo is interesting on that Exeter 2nd three starts back but his 2 wins are in heavy and he just runs like a slow plodder for me – I thought this may happen to quickly for him, but if he doesn’t and he returns to that Exeter form, he’d run his race and be in there pitching at the end. He does have a question going LH, he has that to prove but only his 3rd go this way, yet to place. Graceful Legend wasn’t overpriced to my eyes and steps up in class, and has a few questions- I think there could be stronger stayers in this but the yard are going well and she’s been consistent on her two chase runs to date. She can beat me at 11/2 though. Valadom hasn’t won since November 2016,(tipped on here for that Bangor win from memory, making all as hoped at 9s) but has been running ok. He’s had a wind op, which may make the difference, but a 35 day turnaround is tight as I assume he’d have had a quiet week or two after that. Again this may happen too quick for him also, and I could leave at 7s. That felt about right, or not overpriced in any case. Carnspindle is unexposed over fences, but her wins to date have been when staying on dourly over hurdles, 3m, in soft, at the likes of Chepstow. Again, this ‘could’ happen too quickly and in any case she does need to step up. But, unexposed, so wouldn’t be a shock winner but I could leave her. 10s may be fair but she can be keen also, as with LTO, and i’d want to see a bit more before diving in.

I think that leaves Valhalla – the yard are a bit hit and miss at the moment and this horse seems a bit tripless – he may prefer this distance but he is 0/10,3p going left handed, 0/5,0p over fences. That niggles at me, for one who was 13/2, and I just didn’t think that was overpriced.

So, I think i’ve gone with the solid one here, where conditions shouldn’t be an excuse, provided he can hold a position, and hopefully plenty of these are beaten at the 3rd last, and he storms down the outside to take the spoils. We shall see if I’ve read this right. It’s a competitive enough race where actually anything winning wouldn’t shock me, but at the prices, i’ll stick with team Alexander’s horse. With an eye on Master Burbidge who’s a live one, if picking up his feet!

Adam Norman’s Little Black Book

In 2019 to 18th March, backing all runners ‘systematically’ when posted below… 6/32,13p, +30. I wouldn’t necessarily advise doing that but given Adam’s approach, and the notes we have (posts found in ‘free reports & Systems link at top of site), they may be the best ‘starting point/way in’ in the daily content, if you like finding your own bets/doing a bit of further research… I’ve got his latest article which i’ll post Monday.

3.25 N – Poperinghe Ginge

NEW!

Aintree Grand National 2019 Stats Pack: Complete… READ HERE>>>

This report includes stats/trends pointers for all 7 handicaps, and some stats/trainer pointers, including for those who’s horses last ran at The Cheltenham Festival. It’s likely I may send this report out for free, or a chunk of it anyway, and those stats will form the foundation of my analysis. Aintree is my ‘social’ meeting of the year, where I attend all three days, so my approach to tipping is more relaxed, but given Chelts this year i’ll attempt to work a bit harder. It’s not usually a meeting I do that well at (linked to that social element maybe!) but last year was profitable from the few tips I did advise.

Do not run away with it although it was very profitable 10 plus years ago, and since recording them again showing good signs.

    1. Good figures Colin, well done. Considering getting involved, what size bank would you recommend or should I wait a while longer? Many thanks, Tom.

      1. You do realise you are starting Colin off on his favourite topic there Tom?

Which reminds me, got a couple of jokes:

What do you call the coolest guy in the hospital?
        The ultrasound guy.

What do you call the second coolest guy in the hospital?
        The hip replacement guy.

That’s as good as it gets from us accountants.

      2. Tom
Going through March results on 11th 2 winners and 7 losers record losers – 7 not individually recorded but that is most losers on one day, then 1 day 2 win 6 losers, 1w, 5L, 0W, 5L, these are the most losers on any one day in March.
Summer racing and more meetings 8/10 some days there will be plenty of bets and a suitable bank will be needed again i would say 50 to be on the safe side, and build up, do not know if you were around Tom when i put the old formula up to build the bank and only risking your original stake if it crashed.
Bank £500 = 50 bets at £10, when bank increases to £750 the new stake is
£15 build up to £1000 new stake
£20 etc so only risking the original £500, you can use £1 a point bank of £50 and build up.
        Colin.

        1. Hi Colin, thankyou for taking the time to run through that for me. I have a seperate bank and I’m ready to roll. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out. Best wishes and once again thankyou, Tom.

  3. Evening,

    Tips up quick.

    CALVIGNY 1pt win 12/1 gen

Write ups in morning. Mind how you go!

    1. 14:20 Newbury

      VALHALLA
This is one of those horses that I don`t think Mr Tizzard knows his exact distance, he has tried him over 3m albeit a hcp hdle with Dickie Johnson on board, he has also won a 2m chase with Tom Scudamore on board, but, he is a bit of a monkey and it just depends if Harry can do his usual and sit him in and switch him off a little, think if he switches off too much he could finish out the back of the tv, but, at 13/2 and knowing that Harry only rides for Colin when he has these ones he needs to “switch off/on” it`s worth a punt!
      CALIVIGNY
Now I`m always banging on about jockeys and horses and this is no exception, Lucy Alexander has a special relationship with this horse, only 8 times has she not been on this horse and in his racing career he has never fallen, (pulled up twice, one he pulled up at last and the other one he was being a bit of a monkey) his weight for this race has come down, (thrown in as they would say) and i think that might be the key and this Northern raider may take this without batting an eyelid!

      16:30
      ZANZA
Think this race has a couple of false ones in it, it could go to NUBE NEGRA, but, 5/2 is short for me, the Queens horse hasn`t had a run for over a year and WHB in my eyes only likes quirky up and down tracks, so we come then to my two in the market, Dickie i feel lto got it wrong with this one, granted he was pulling around a little and it was a race that was put back because of the equine flu (which should normally be run at Newbury). Now, back at Newbury in a re-meeting of a lot of those horses, hopefully he should get the room he needs and make amends!
      MAQUISARD
Another who has been running at all distances and courses and has transferred across to Chris Gordon to see if he can get a tune out of this one, he got brought down (it says UR, but it was because a horse fell directly in front of him) at the 3rd last here lto and it was terrible luck as Tom Cannon was about to press the button and watch him go!! hopefully that won`t have affected jockey, or, horse and they can make amends here!

As usual hope all horses and jockeys come back safe and sound and good luck with all your selections.

  4. Christ, anyone would think you don’t get out of the house (Smiley)

7.00 Newc Confrontational 2 Pts each way

The favourite here chosen words could be an improver and last time cost me a couple of grand on a multiple. My beaten hoss was prominna and I bet it as I thought it was a two hoss race against a load of carthorses. On the face of it this looks a better race but they are more what might be than actually are, Johnston’s nag is 2nd fav purely because of his strike rate at the moment. Add in some veterans and disappointing runners and your left with Confrontational as a possible.

Unless we have a dreaded change of tactics by others he will make all here from what I’ve always said can be an advantage, drawn 1. Mullens is the best jockey around on front runners and the return to 7 fur should be perfect for one of those quickening make all merchants. In the circumstances 5/1 is a let in for each way thieves and I fully expect it to shorten.

    1. haha, i get out every now and then!! I do try and behave and restrict any proper evenings out to Saturday’s 🙂
thanks for the tip and the write up, best of luck! He’s doomed as I did have a small nibble EW, so apols in advance.

    Lingfield 2.40 Noble Deed 80/1

34 lb under his last win over C&D 3 years ago. Has a couple of bits of form here last year off 5lb higher that would be good enough. Has been in the frame 5 of the last 8 runs over this 6f.

  13. Waneen is semi interesting as he creeps down towards last winning mark. Horrible run LTO and has terrible draw but I am being drawn in

    3.15 Lingfield 16/1

    1. Money for Waneen and a pretty encouraging run, will keep an eye on this for it’s next run. Hopefully a better draw and return of visor.

  14. NOT TIPS EVERYONE ……………… JUST MUMBLINGS OF A MAD MAN !!!

Getting gradually back into the swing of things after my initial revamping of my systems …. only just coming to the end of my “All Weather systems” about to start to sort out the flat and then finally my jumps systems for next season i guess ( but i am so brain freezed after updating and adjusting all the “all weather systems” i am now thinking maybe it’s now a good time just to “concentrate” on just the “All Weather ” 🙂 … or maybe i am just lazy 🙂 we shall see 🙂

Any way first day back backing proper ……… here’s what i am backing e/w today (where possible) .. you maybe better off laying them ..lol 🙂
1.45 Newbury 4 Remastered = Newbury is a good course for front runners i think ?? should keep going alright around here
4.45 Musselburgh 2 Samtu (IRE) = should lead and not get caught
4.30 Newbury 5 Our Merlin = ( name of my current whippet 🙂 but hopefully has a good e/w chance ?
5.05 Newbury 7 Nobby = name of my beloved long gone cat but also looks a good prospect and i will keep backing him until he loses ( queue that being today 🙁 )
4.55 Lingfield 1 Shyron ( hoping ray gets back to winning ways today ?)

so there you go ……. i am probably a bit over excited and got trigger happy as usual on my bets first day back ………… but it’s good to be back in the game 🙂

    3.15 Lingfield 16/1

    1. Money for Waneen and a pretty encouraging run, will keep an eye on this for it’s next run. Hopefully a better draw and return of visor.

      1. yep, running into some form, all chance gone at start really, stuck wide for an age, lit up a tad, had to drag him so far back just to get cover etc, and short run in once swing off that bend, winner always in 3rd, tracking pace I think. Suggests he’s time may not be far away, like you say better draw, can get a better position etc.
