  1. As promised earlier here is my true story about how to skin the bookies.

About 20 years ago I was running a group of restaurants in London. The latest one we had bought and were refitting was next door to a very small William Hill.

One hot Wednesday, in June I think I attended a site meeting with the builders and ended up going on to the flat roof to discuss the location of an air conditioning unit. There was a great big satellite dish in one corner and I asked the builders what it was. They said it was the feed for William Hill, they knew because they had lent a big piece of ply up against it and the staff from WH had come round to ask if they had cut through any cables or such like. The builders being fine upstanding men said they knew nothing but raced up to the roof and quickly removed the offending ply.

At this point a plan came into my head. I resolved to listen to the first couple of 2yo 5f maiden sprints and see if I could try to back the winner retrospectively. So at 1.59 the ply was put in place. I listened to the 2.00pm from Beverley or somewhere and lo and behold a 20/1 shot bolted up. I nipped round to WH and had a £20 win on double quick. The staff were all of a twitter and said they didn’t know what was wrong as they had no feed to the screens and pa. They took the bet and it was time stamped about 2.06pm. We left them for about 5-10 minutes until some other races had completed then lifted off the ply.

I decided to leave it for an hour or so, so as not to raise suspicion then went in to collect the winnings. I was told the win was too big and they did not have the cash to pay out so would have to go to the bigger branch down Essex Road where they would be expecting me.

I went down there about an hour later and handed in the ticket, the cashier called the manager who said he would just have to go and check. He disappeared into the back and after about 5 minutes the scale of this criminal enterprise began to dawn on me. After another couple minutes he came out and said he was waiting for head office to clear the payment before disappearing again.

At this stage my nerve failed me, I convinced myself that he had called the old bill and scarpered. So trying to skin the books left me £20 out of pocket plus about 12 pints for all the building crew but boy did they enjoy that days work.

  2. You naughty bugger Hugh!!

There always comes a time in anyone’s life that leaves a long-lasting smile to be savoured on occasion and especially when a stranger clicks that switch and the memory floods in.
Working on a quite high roof behind the Kings Head (if ever at races do not leave before visiting, once had a pint or two when I was in a canoe?) in the centre of York. I can see clearly in all directions. ‘I can see all obstacles in my way’ oops going into Labi Siffre. Squawky feed to Hills across the way, lad with a few tenners in his pocket on the corner, binoc’s out watching the sprints directly in front of me. It was ‘a bright, bright sunshiney day’

  3. 4.40 FL, Calum Gilhooley, 1 point each way, 20/1 available now. Won well LTO. The favourite seems poor value at 8/11 in such a race.

    1. The price cut-off for these is 16 at BFSP. Theatre act is the borderline one today. I will include it in results whatever happens now.

Ffos Las 3-10. Global Thrill 22-1
    Ffos Las 4-10. Maguire’s Glen 11-1
    Catterick 2-20. Theatre Act 11-1

  8. Tip 22-Catt 2.20 Rockliffe 9/1
The odds on favourite looks very interesting,in that it has never won a race,it’s a nice race for taking on the favourite e/w,he may win by 20 lengths but i’m going with one that has course winning form,a trainer in top form,a very good jockey that got a tune out of him on c&d

      1. Hiya George, just checked Lambourn Trainers and Usher reckons Arlechhinos will need a couple of runs yet. The fav looks strong (36% win/63% place for that T/J combo in last year) but we are on a roll with your Carroll selections 🙂

Like yours aside from last two (so they’ll obviously win) and like Ulster in the 19.00 and Debbonair in 19.30 (37%/56% in last year).

Have a good day shipping and a good evening sipping 🙂

        1. HA HA ..good work detective mc 🙂 … seems strange mr probert on ” just a run out” then ?? …….. but maybe no other rides in race and he is at the track anyway and obviously he will give better feedback to trainer than perhaps a more experienced rider ? i think it’s well drawn ??
between us we will clean up .. i am sure .. ha ha lol ???? ..not 🙂 (in my case anyhow 🙂 )

          1. Ha, in our dreams! I think Usher is usually quite straight up about his horses chances so I believe him :-). Maybe Probert usually rides that hoss so they want him up on the comeback run? Good Luck anyhoo
