Monthly Competition – Your chance to win £50 in cash, EVERY month.

I thought it was about time I rewarded those of you who contributed regularly to the comments and I thought a monthly ‘tipping’ competition may be the way forward. Now, in time, I hope to get some ‘tipping league’ software set up within the blog, but that won’t be anytime soon, for various reasons.

The RULES

  • A minimum of 20 ‘tips’ per month (horses only!)
  • Tips recorded to 1 point win
  • Tips recorded to Betfair Starting Price (excluding commission deductions)
  • Tips posted in the comments as now, and clearly marked as a ‘tip’ 🙂
  • The winner – whoever has the Biggest positive Return On Investment %
  • The prize: £50 to the winner. (if there’s ever joint winners the prize will be split)
  • I have the final say on everything.

This is meant to be a bit of fun, and not much faff at all, either for you or me.

…But for those of you who wish to enter, those are the rules.

Recording results is down to you, as is posting your monthly figure come month end/start of next month, in the comments. Many of you keep a record anyway, so it will just be a case of also keeping them in line with the rules above. This isn’t meant to add to my workload, and it won’t work if it does, and is mainly based on trusting you to follow the above, if you so wish to ‘enter’.

For example, Solent above, would simply find out the BFSP of his 8 winners, and adjust the results accordingly. Easy. 🙂

In reality this competition is aimed at around 8 to 10 of you who I would call regular ‘tipsters’, but maybe some more may start chipping in. Do still keep results as you do now, and the prices you get etc, but if you wish to be in with a chance of winning the £50 monthly cash prize, you just have to keep results in line with the above rules also.

From time to time there will be a discretionary £20 cash prizes for my ‘contributor (s) ‘ of the month, which is not restricted just to tipping content, and is what I deem to be a positive contribution to the community, including from non-regular contributors. This can also cover ‘tipping’ results to ‘advised prices’ , (so they are worth recording) but it’s hard to do a monthly competition on that basis.

In truth I only had this idea this afternoon, and you may think it’s rubbish. But we shall see how it goes. It’s not meant to be a serious endeavour nor change the existing ‘feel’ in the comments, and if it does that i’ll just stop doing it.

The first month’s competition starts 1st Feb 🙂

How to find BFSP?

Apparently you can find BFSP on Attheraces website, without needing to register, or…

…the timeform website here>>> https://www.timeform.com/horse-racing/results/today

You just need to register a free account. EG a 8.00 winner is  +7 points profit, to 1 point win. Easy.

Best of luck,

Josh

  1. Early finish tonight with Newcastle abandoning, so only 2 ran for me both came 2nd. One got backed in below the minimum so…. 0W 1L P/L -1.0 Excellent day though with all those tips to watch. Just hope that Sandown makes it tomorrow.

  2. RECENT TIPS
Putting these up tonight as I need to be at doc’s in morning to give more than an armful (our older viewers will understand).
I also have a problem with gg.alert tracker which I am unable to log into to add nags and change notes. I’m getting a daily email so there must be a glitch somewhere. I’ve emailed them and no answer so assume nobody there to help. In the meantime if anyone notices errors in number of runs or omissions please shout up.

Any winners will be at 09.00 odds for bog.

  3. I have to say Josh, I’m absolutely shocked at you tipping Belami Des Pictons. I know you’ve had a tough time lately, we’ve all being there but taking on 17 runners first time in a 30k h’cap after 450 days where its not going to lead as usual !! the killer is the price, 4/1. You’ve gone out of your way lately posting the importance of not betting exposed horses but I think you’ve forgot in the meantime value. Ironically the race is full of unexposed horses that are lurking in the long grass.
It doesn’t really matter whether you or I am right, betting anything at 4s in these circumstances is madness long term. by the way, does this qualify towards the non tipping £20 post ( scratch head

      1. Of course no one is forced to back anything on here but it’s interesting to hear some one explain why they wouldn’t.

        1. Agree, Racing is a sport filled with opinions sadly some are unable to accept others views, today watch the TV presenters could be 3 plus different picks in one race and they all give valid reasons why their opinion is correct, do not pay much attention to them but last Flat season noticed Jason Weaver would give out double figured priced horses and on many occasions would run a good race including winning at 33/1, will take note this flat season of his view however the only down side is they are virtually off before he gives the name and you have trouble getting on.
          Colin

    1. Josh’s selection has some stonking form and if Venetia has it fit could outclass these? The weight may be a factor against an improver at the bottom of the weights and we dont know what the ground will be like yet. The 4/1 does look miserly but the bookies must be scared of it to go so low. I think I could back it at 6/1 on my tissue.

    2. Chubnut… I’d hope by now that provided you don’t question my integrity and are polite, as you always are, you can say what the hell you want. Your comments and sparking of debate will find a discretionary £20 on its way to you one day haha 🙂
Value is in the eye of the beholder. I considered an EW bet on the 10s poke but concluded that I still thought the 4s was value. 17 runners is irrelevant to a point if on my subjective judgement X don’t have much chance at all. I thought he could be 5/2, 3s shot based on his chance.
You can read my write up on the free post. Given the form of the yard and her stats with days off and the money that came before he was withdrawn LTO I’m confident fitness won’t be an issue. He does not have to lead as per the Newbury run. He can track any pace and idle past the old boys when he pleases.
This could be a grade 2 horse in a handicap, a high 150s horse in a handicap. Plenty in here are dodgy jumpers and have to prove that they stay.
We shall see if I’ve got him right or not. The last 5 renewals have been won by horses 5/1< . The race generally fancies those near the top of the market and Venetia has won this twice in last 10 years, it's a target chase for her. I mean obviously he'll be BD at fence 1 now but that's the game. If he's fit and jumps as he did when last seen he'll win this as I think he could be in a different class. I agree about the long term strategy but you still have to read it race by race. I've been guilty in the past of this type blinding me from having a dabble in a bigger one but I'm comfortable with my approach in this race. If Kilcrea or Kayf win mind you'll probably hear my screams of anguish wherever you are haha.

  4. So if Sandown is on: Originally posted on the free post in error!!!

    Feb competition tips:
    1. 1.15 SP Azzuri and 2. 3.00 SP Virginia Chick. Both at BFSP.

    As Tips:
1.15 SP Azzurri, 8/1 x 1 points each way. An interesting Irish import for the Skeltons. Won 4/8 chases and at age 7 is still improving.
3.00 SP Virginia Chick, 12/1 x 1 point each way. Won well LTO. Low weight. The underrated Isobel Williams on board. The horse is 5/12 over hurdles.

    Systems selections:

3.00 SP Flemcara (Emma Lavelle handicapper up to 3 miles), 12/1 x 1 point each way.

    Good luck.

  5. The two greedy piggies looked forlornly out the window at the snow. “What the **** are we going to do now” said Pinky, “this no racing is a joke.” Speak for yourself brawn brain, I’m getting stuck into the All Weather said Perky, a (piggy) bank off 50 units should work, thats half of what some geezer with a dodgy hip said online. That sounds great Perky, I’m off for some truffling but I’ll dip my trotter in the tub and throw a few shrewd bets into that gormless bookie oaf Wolfie.

Later that evening Pinky arrived at Perkys full of gloom and doom. ” what a load of bollocks, I’ve seen better races behind the hen house when foxy’s been around” Two losers, one where the dopey jock was late taking off the blind and the other first one off the bridle in the straight, it’s an absolute nonsense this All Weather. ” you must be having a giraffe Pinky, I had 4/1 and 6/1 winners, I’m pissed I didn’t have the double. It’s the easiest game going, half the fields are Donkeys. “Yea well you just got lucky” said Pinky, I’m going to use the free time for some serious mud baths. See you in a couple of days.

Soon after, Pinkys knees went weak when he heard Perky was coining it in winner after winner on the All Weather. “I’ve decided to row in with you Bro, what’s the next gravy train selection” said Pinky. “We have to be sharp Pinky, not only do I make my picks but I check out the Racing to Profit website, thats full of shrewd bastards” said Perky. Now don’t forget Pinky, level stakes, no pressing up and stick to what Mr squeaky hip said about (piggy) banks.

Lo and behold, probably due to that little law in the corner called ” Regression to the mean” the losers started mounting up. “I’ve had enough of betting on this glorified roulette wheel” said Perky, I’m off loading while I still have a 2 point profit and will utilise it in another system, although I did run the winners through the bailing machine in the barn and a micro pointed to a dump by anything under 6/1 going into the stalls was even more profitable. “But what about me” screamed Pinky. I’ve spunked thirty two points on this madness, what do I do now? Well, said Perky, according to those who know. Just keep with the programme and the all encompassing (piggy) bank will save you, otherwise just forget it happened and blame the bad weather that wasn’t in the mix.

Pinky and Perky went on to happier days where the laws of randomness were easy on them and only stole the Wolfs percentage from their optimistic, easy found selections. Over time both came to realise nothing comes easy in the Farmyard and ventures outside the fold hold some very wild beings.

Non tipping contribution ( smiley face)

    1. So did they give non systematised data based approaches to punting the ‘pork’ chop? I guess it saved their bacon?

    2. Chubnut

Well written loved it, but you must get out more!!!
      Happy truffle hunting.
      Colin dodgy hip.

Ref piggy bank again liked it however Clive Holt mentioned the bank in his book published in 1988 and i took notice of his opinion and still use his idiot guide today, for i will always take advice, lastly he also mentioned Class if a horse is proven in the class the it can win if conditions and other factors are in place.
AW racing those poor quality racehorse are running in their class and in most cases on the surface that they perform at their best, the surface is mainly consistent unlike winter NH where it can change from good to heavy in a few hours and your bet as been placed when the going was good so drop your slip in the drain for the horse cannot win on heavy.
You really should do some research on AW racing before writing it off, but that is your opinion and tunnel vision.

    3. Hi Chubnut…Take it you will never be tipping on here but not sure what you are on …certainly is not oxygen! Good luck to you.

  6. TIP
    300 Sandown
    BALLYMOY
Double Green horse whom ive followed this season and is improving with every run ..
Won a good g3 LTO on similar type track and extra distance should suit well.
3 wins this on not the best ground would add to that he should stay..
Coole Cody should drag him along and would nt think that Jacob would set all the pace ..

  7. Here we go for hopefully a nice weekend of racing the Dublin festival looks set fair and if Sandown is on we may be looking at a Stewart / Josh and hopefully Nick winner (lurking in the long grass, as chubnut would have us believe).
ALL BELOW ARE TIPS AND WILL BE RECORDED AS SUCH.

    14:00 Leopardstown
    JETEZ 12/1 gen 1pt win
this one to me has been here seen it and done it, he does need it good ground, but, the forecast dry day and gusty winds should be enough to dry it out. (Sunday will be a different story). Jockey Puppy Power should have enough left in the tank when they turn in and this boy has a turn of foot. I cannot understand why he is 12/1, so at that price is value and do the proverbial, fill your boots!!
ECLAIR DE BEAUFAIR 12/1 gen 1 pt win
He was 16/1 when i started writing this and is now 12/1, so , believe there may be a gamble about to begin on this fella, he is another one who has progressed every race and i think next stop is Cheltenham with him, still a baby and could be anything, stable jockey on board and should go well!
IVANOVICH GORBATOV 50/1 gen 1/2 pt ew
I just think 50`s is too big for this fella, he may have “gone”, but, if and i suppose it is a big if, he turns up on a going day, he could get a lead and actually remember what winning feels like..he has speed and could burn all of these off, if he`s not up with the pace though he will sulk so, give it a minute then cash out if he is not in front rank, i don`t normally advocate that, but, like i said it depends what they do with this fella.

    15:35 Sandown
AMI DESBOIS 10/1 gen 1pt win
Josh has basically stole my thunder with this, yard in form, versatile jumper, unexposed and will relish the low weight he has, fill your boots with the 10/1 and sit back and watch the race unfold as this fella comes from the back to battle it out with my other pick.
SANDY BEACH 20/1 gen 1pt win
The key to this fella is Tom Scudamore, he seems to get on with him and everyone knows how much emphasis i put on jockeyship along with the horses form. He absolutely hacked up at Uttoxeter and even though the last time the two came to this course they were pulled up I believe SB is a different animal after his wind op and may surprise, he was given a very weird ride lto, HC riding him well out the back, when he needs to be racing just off the pace, doesn`t seem as though anything was a miss, maybe HC just didn`t know how to ride him, or, it was a ploy to push his price out here? 20/1 is too big, so have a fill your boots moment again!!

    16:20 LEOPARDSTOWN

    TISAMYSTERY 11/1 gen 1pt win
Well, if you were reading earlier in the week you will have seen i mentioned about this fella, he is another who is seen it done it tshirt candidate. Even G Elliott didn`t want to take him on with Cubomania again, (he is entered into a different race) so, fully expect this guy to do the business again with the same jockey as last time out…
LAKE TAKAPUNA 10/1 gen 1pt win
Now, Dermot Weld one of my all time favourite Irish trainers and my new protege David Mullins, what`s not to like with that combination, the horse is a bit quirky, but, at double figure odds I am willing to take a chance and see how we get on…

As always hope all jockeys and horses come back safe and sound. As always good luck with whatever you pick tomorrow/ today.

    1. Race panned out as i expected, Gorabatov ran a blinder and sp of 16/1 showed that he was fancied, got 50`s, so, happy with that and he will be much shorter come Festival time…

  8. In terms of bets I am not mad on anything at present and so I have had two £5 each way Yankees for an interest on Saturday. My usual stake is £25 per point.

    1.15 SP Azzurri at 8/1;
    3.00 SP Flemcara at 12/1;
    3.35 SP Kayf Advanture at 16/1;
    6.45 KP Scofflaw at 6/1.

    And

    2.10 CH Normandy Blue at 9/2;
    3.00 SP Lungarno Palace at 20/1;
    6.45 KP Enzemble at 8/1;
8.15 KP Iley Boy at 12/1.

    Good luck.

  9. Hi all, another coming out of the woodwork, but the comp is a great initiative, so here goes!
2.00 Leopardstown Jetez 12/1 in Ladbroke hurdle, well related, Jessie Harrington is a stable I follow and I think the horse is still improving – good winner over C&D at Christmas and stepped up again last time, 2nd but well clear of the rest, should go well tomorrow, may like these big field handicaps GL

  10. Early finish tonight with Newcastle abandoning, so only 2 ran for me both came 2nd. One got backed in below the minimum so…. 0W 1L P/L -1.0 Excellent day though with all those tips to watch. Just hope that Sandown makes it tomorrow.

  12. Monthly competition. Great idea Josh. I may not win it , because I would find difficult to find 20 per month.
But! if I’m up there. I’m sure I will.

    Six year stats.
One or two other filters, but basically
A Balding handicappers 1st or 2nd run at this track.
    17 from 38 = 44%
If the horse won LTO, 10 from 13 = 77%
    2:20L BALLYQUIN
    That’s the stats.

    Pertaining to this race.
    Drawn 1, likes to attack.
    6/1WH boost last night.
    Stats..Also works at Kemp/Chelmsford

3.00 SP Virginia Chick, 12/1 x 1 point each way. Won well LTO. Low weight. The underrated Isobel Williams on board. The horse is 5/12 over hurdles.

    Systems selections:

3.00 SP Flemcara (Emma Lavelle handicapper up to 3 miles), 12/1 x 1 point each way.

    Good luck.

“ what a load of bollocks, I’ve seen better races behind the hen house when foxy’s been around” Two losers, one where the dopey jock was late taking off the blind and the other first one off the bridle in the straight, it’s an absolute nonsense this All Weather. “ you must be having a giraffe Pinky, I had 4/1 and 6/1 winners, I’m pissed I didn’t have the double.

Lo and behold, probably due to that little law in the corner called “ Regression to the mean” the losers started mounting up.

        1. Morning ….. blimey it’s all going a bit “stir” crazy in here again ……it’s like we are all living in the film “one flew over the cuckkoo’s nest” …. wmsl 🙂

So are we jumping today or running on sand ????????
          gl/gb 🙂

  16. TIP
    300 Sandown

  18. In terms of bets I am not mad on anything at present and so I have had two £5 each way Yankees for an interest on Saturday. My usual stake is £25 per point.

    1.15 SP Azzurri at 8/1;
    3.00 SP Flemcara at 12/1;
    3.35 SP Kayf Advanture at 16/1;
    6.45 KP Scofflaw at 6/1.

    And

    2.10 CH Normandy Blue at 9/2;
    3.00 SP Lungarno Palace at 20/1;
    6.45 KP Enzemble at 8/1;
8.15 KP Iley Boy at 12/1.

    Good luck.

  20. just a few that i have had a small interest in.
    Lingfield .
    1-45. Mokarris 20-1
    2-20. Ballyquin 5-1
    2-55. Big Country 5-1
    Leopardstown.
    2-00. Jezki 33-1
    3-45. Us And Them 16-1
    4-20. Tisamystery and Lake Takapuna

  21. Monthly competition. Great idea Josh. I may not win it , because I would find difficult to find 20 per month.
But! if I’m up there. I’m sure I will.

    Six year stats.
One or two other filters, but basically
A Balding handicappers 1st or 2nd run at this track.
    17 from 38 = 44%
If the horse won LTO, 10 from 13 = 77%
    2:20L BALLYQUIN
    That’s the stats.

    Pertaining to this race.
    Drawn 1, likes to attack.
    6/1WH boost last night.
    Stats..Also works at Kemp/Chelmsford

  24. One more tip for the comp – Commander of Fleet 12.50 Leopardstown 4/1 – should relish the step up in trip today, was the original Ballymore fav but Albert Bartlett more likely now, must go close

  25. Having looked at my usual ‘elements’ to follow and backing the 4 S2A’s in the 3.35 i have decided to swerve Josh’s two which are now a paltry 4.6 and 8.2 on Betfair. Couldn’t face the prospect of backing 6 selections (almost 40 %) from 16 runners. This will of course virtually guarantee that one of those two big race tips Wins 🙂

  26. Tips:
    Copain De Class Sandown 13:10 1pt e/w 8/1
    Virginia Chick Sandown 15:00 1pt e/w 12/1
    Divine Spear Sandown 15:35 1pt e/w 20/1

    1. I have put the in a Yankee with Hammer Gunn, 6.45 KP.

I need to fund a trip to San Francisco and Vegas and so this one should do the job.

  27. Kimberlite Candy EW 3.35 Sand

There’s no doubt the jolly has the best form here but 7/2 is asking for a nut squeezer. Kimberlite has now drifted out to a silly price considering the excellence of the trainer and I’m sure the brains trust at McManus HQ could have had a few take part here. The blot is last time out where it was tailed at 4/1 fav, that day he continually held his head to the right and was the first horse to come off the bridle without any bad mistakes. At 20/1 I’ll back his sharp trainer to iron out any problems from last time.

  28. Hi all, my three TIPs for today.

    Today:
    3.0 Sandown Folsom Blue
    3.35 Kimberlite Candy
    4.10 Johnbb
    1pt each and 0.25ew Trixie
    5pts total.

  33. Something different in terms of race selection going for the Scoop 6 races using the system selection process to see how this stacks up:
    13.15. Sandown Dolos
    14.00. Leop. Of You Go
    15.00. Sand. Ballymoy
    15.35. Sand. Houblon Des Obeaux
    15.35 Sand. Le Richebourg
    16.20. Leop. Moon Over Germany

Selections are the top – albeit some are only separated by a point, so close as you would expect in the way Scoop Six selections are chosen . Other high scores are as follows( with the exception of 13.15 at Sandown where Dolos was well clear of the rest):
    14.00. Leop. Wonder Laish
    15.00. San. Keepers Hill/Eminent Poet/Casko D’Airy
15.35. San. Shamroe Santos/Ami Des Bois

    16.20. Leop. Tisamystery/R’evelyn Pleasure

Nothing like sticking your head above the parapet! We will see how they go. Gd luck with whatever you select to today.

    1. Completely priced out at Sandown so just the one for this afternoon at Lingfield.

      1.45 Corinthia Knight……. 12.0

      1. Nothing for me at Kempton tonight. Poor day for me today especially given it was Saturday. So onwards and downwards. 😉 R/T…… 0W, 2L, P/L -2.0 BFSP

  34. No competition tip today.
Lingfield and Kempton are not happy hunting grounds for me.
Derek Shaw has hit a bit of form and has a couple at Chelmsford,Dynamo Walt loves the track but 5/1 is well below my psychological barrier.

  37. Hi All, Josh since you started the tipping competition there are so many heads above the parapet it’s like a shooting gallery I’m just going to squeeze on the end.
12.50 Leopardstown Salsaretta 9/1 I just think this one looks progressive I always back mine E/W hot race but we shall see.
1.15 Sandown Commis D’Office 14/1, Total shot in the dark, but Venetia Williams can ready one had wind op tongue tie on.
2.20 Lingfield Gold Stone 20/1, Won last time out after wind op, looks like extra furlong will suit Kevin Ryan’s only runner at Lingfield and Marmite Spencer up what could go wrong.
2.45 Chelmsford Yfenni 11/1, noticed it was tipped up here a few times must make a bold bid at the price I’m on.

Good Luck whatever you have backed today.,

  40. Think ill join the tipping party. With the going now soft at Sandown
Le Prezien 2m2f & below – Soft/Heavy 6/7, 1p so ideal conditions. Only concern being it’s a JP horse and a poor run here and a few lbs drop could be the plan for Cheltenham. Anyhow at 7/1 it’s worth a play.

Selections are the top – albeit some are only separated by a point, so close as you would expect in the way Scoop Six selections are chosen . Other high scores are as follows( with the exception of 13.15 at Sandown where Dolos was well clear of the rest):
    14.00. Leop. Wonder Laish
    15.00. San. Keepers Hill/Eminent Poet/Casko D’Airy
15.35. San. Shamroe Santos/Ami Des Bois
    15.45. Leop. Knocknanuss/Duca De Thaix
    16.20. Leop. Tisamystery/R’evelyn Pleasure

Nothing like sticking your head above the parapet! We will see how they go. Gd luck with whatever you select to today.

  51. No competition tip today.
Lingfield and Kempton are not happy hunting grounds for me.
Derek Shaw has hit a bit of form and has a couple at Chelmsford,Dynamo Walt loves the track but 5/1 is well below my psychological barrier.
Kodi Dream drifted out to 12’s before settling at 9,10.65 bfsp

  52. My tips for today (-1 after yesterday)

A bit of scatter gun approach –

    J’ouvert 1.00 Chelmsford
    Le Prezien 1.45 Sandown
    Gino Trail 1.45 Sandown
    Yfenni 2.45 Chelmsford
    Lord Napier 3.00 Sandown
Give me A Copper 3.35 Sandown

  53. Yesterday the race was abandoned.

David Simcock does well at Chelmsford and is in form so I’ll tip two of his today.

    Chelmsford 1.35 Glory Awaits

    Chelmsford 3.55 Come On Tier

    Greg.

  56. Now there is so many people tipping would it be better to have another page for all the people who want to make comments rather than giving there tips. It is tedikous to have to wade through all the comments to find the nuggets of gold from the top tipsters?

    1. I tend to agree, it can be difficult to find tips you follow at times when there’s 60 odd comments a day and time is a premium or working. It’s tough trying to please everyone though.

      1. Surely the whole point of the comp is to encourage more participation? Just scroll past us also -rans to get to the cream 🙂

  57. today’s selections.
    Sandown.
    1-15. Bigmatre 10-1 1/2 pt ew
3-00. Keeper Hill 8-1 1/2 pt ew, Coole Cody 40-1 1/4 pt ew
