Daily Tips

#1 2.05 Warw – Goodnight Charlie – 1 point EW – 8/1 (gen) UP (last) 10/1, well the market weakness was a concern, and she’s ran flat – no excuses, I don’t think they’ve gone too hard, distress signals early on, damn. Looked good on paper. Unless it’s not a day to race on front end, but then the 2nd was never far off them. To rub it in the winner hacks up 3s>7s SP, shame he wasn’t that this morning.

#2 3.45 Warw – Brandon Hill – 1 point EW – 8/1 (gen) 3rd 8/1>5/1, ran his race, the winner clearly did have the class! Demolished them. I don’t think being on the front has been the place to be there today for whatever reason, but nothing was beating that winner on the day. +0.6 on race.

as of 09.11, that is all for today, write ups on way…

Goodnight Charlie…hopefully my rare venture into EW betting doesn’t end in disaster but sometimes you look at a race and a horse jumps out at being the wrong price. This one just shouldn’t be 8s, and in truth i’m not sure why she is a bigger price than the Pauling horse. She should be 9/2, 5s against these I think. She ran a cracker on her return LTO, where she may have needed it but in any case stayed on again past Muckle Roe. He’s lurking on a career high mark and is always open to something with more in hand at the moment, but he’s a solid yardstick around here and gives hope that GG could have more to come over fences from this mark. They were all chasing an unexposed VW chaser there who appeared to have 20lb+ in hand. This one loves Warwick, rarely runs a bad race here, stays and importantly races prominently. It’s not impossible she gets the lead here and her jumping is usually very good. I think she may enjoy this further yardage also. She knows how to win yet is still unexposed enough over fences I think, this being her 7th handicap chase start. Many of her recent races have produced numerous subsequent winners and I don’t think this mark will be any reason for defeat. If she repeats her last run here, let alone improves for it, i’ll be a tad surprised if she isn’t in the frame, and I think she will be the one they have to pass as they approach the last.

The dangers… well Skelton’s is to be feared but isn’t overpriced for one that is clearly better over further it seems (that’s where the improvement came from LTO, as well as being freshened up after a busy summer), is usually held up further back and is on a career high mark now after the rise. I won’t be shocked if he is staying on and wins this, but I can leave at the price. Plus One is the ‘could be anything’ horse in the race that may show himself to have plenty in hand one day. That may be today and the form of his last run couldn’t have worked out much better. However he is very lightly raced for his age which suggests he’s had plenty of problems/is hard to train, and has had another 64 days off here. He hasn’t won under rules yet and while a point winner, also has to prove his stamina in this sphere. He is a danger, and I suppose a fear of those two, combined with fact I think mine will be in the right place on the front end, has made me go EW. These three are the most interesting in this. The selection had a few of these behind her LTO and I don’t know why any would reverse the form here IF she runs her race. There is money for Optimistic Bias but he is 10 and returned after a lengthy break LTO. He may have badly needed it and will come on plenty but I was happy to watch him until showing more. That was over hurdles so may have been a prep, and he had some ok chase form in 2017, albeit i’m not sure it was overly strong. He could be the interesting outsider here.

*

Brandon Hill… i’m dipping into a hunter chase here which is rare but this is another who’s price just looks silly and i’d be a tad surprised if he didn’t at least place here. He’s lightly raced for his age but ran a cracker at Aintree when last seen under rules. Not many, bar the fav, could have done that in this race I don’t think. Tom’s horses are going better now than they were and father + son are 5/19,13p in hunter chases together. It seems Tom has dipped into these races so he can give his son rides/experience, and he does so with some decent horses. I find it interesting that they turn up at a track where he’s won before over fences when trained by Tom Lacey. He’s a bold jumping front runner and if he gets into a rhythm he could get this lot out of their comfort zone and on the stretch. Another one where IF he runs his race, i’d be mildly surprised if he’s out the places.

The dangers… well Shantou Flyer would win this at his best and in part that’s why i’ve gone EW, coupled with the fact I think he’ll get an easy enough lead. His better form has been in the slop though and this is his first run in 282 days. He can be held up off the pace also and on this ground around here (albeit it’s probably dead/tacky again) it could happen too quickly for him. Hobson can ready them but I assume Cheltenham will be the aim, or Aintree. But, he does seem short enough which gives some EW value to others. On paper/the market, it does look a 4 horse race. Cousin Pete   may be worth a saver as,with the claim, he gets lumps of weight and is clearly a decent animal at this sort of level. He can be held up also, was beaten at 1/3 in his PtP LTO and hasn’t raced around here before. So, some questions, but if the fav falters, I think it will be mine and him fighting this out. Hazel Hill is hard to weigh up – a prolific winner who can’t be discounted but it’s likely he just won’t have the class of the other three in this. Not to my eyes anyway. This is the deepest race he’s ever run in.

  1. Update on results first of all

    Colins bets SP – 27.25 BOG – 21.50
Never known a January this poor taking Saturdays 5 bets beat the price on all of them and Ruth Carr’s was backed from 15/2 to 4/1 during the month constantly beating the price so still doing something right.

    Elite bets SP + 15.38 BOG + 27.05
Delighted that this is starting to prove what i always knew long term it will win, not very nice when you start following on a losing run, and not really had a 20/1 plus yet, hopefully like buses 2 will come along in quick succession.
    Colin

    1. Been a member/following racing to profit on and off for couple of years now and whilst I’ve not contributed before just felt had to add my comments ref Clive Holt.
If memory serves me right his ‘profitable Winners always Back value Winners’, was first book I bought on horse racing and is always handy bed time reading. As mentioned his thoughts and methods seem to have withstood the test of time and when things are not firing on all cylinders on the betting front (as at this moment in time), he has the happy knack of rejuvenating ones hopes – very much like this club
To all the regular contributors and most especially to Josh, keep up the great work
      Cheers Loz

  2. Tips: My eye is a bit out of focus at present.
3.10 Warwick, Nearly famous, 1 point each way at 8/1 BOG. Top weight here. Change of stable from Ireland to a trainer who does OK with such. The Fav looks short based upon being thrashed by Torpillo.

3.30 Sed, Romeo Brown, 1 point each way at 6/1 BOG. The trainer and jockey have a good record at the track and the horse won well LTO. The FAV is highly rated by its trainer but needs to show it here. I cannot see why we cannot at least place here.

    Good luck.

  3. I have really noticed extreme market volatility recently. Maybe that is because there is not much liquidity during the day and so it is easy for traders to move the markets one way or the other or perhaps some other reason.

Yesterday le musee went from 7 out to 12 and then back into 7 again. Samuel Jackson went from 8 out to 13 and then finished with a BFSP of 6.8. Those are just bets from this thread. One I was tracking the other day (Compton prince) went from 8 out to 35 and then back into 14.

Makes it an interesting dilemma as to when to strike the bet. Once I have decided to have a bet on something, if it has drifted a lot, I just take the odds there and then. The morning moves seem to matter less and less in my experience. Yes some will carry on drifting but those that will win will more often than not contract at some point.

Anyway, enough rambling – a decent day today. Fiddlers Bow won for the handicap chase system at 9/2 (after reaching a ridiculous 6/1 on the exchanges – not that I got it) and both geronimo and Samuel Jackson won for the system bets. I will settle at their 10am prices of 3/1 (10/3 available in places) and 7/1 respectively.

Just in case anyone is interested in how I stake the handicap chase bets, I effectively back them as 2 pointers.

Will keep to level 1 point stakes for that P&L though, else I would just be inflating the points for the hell of it (just like Colin’s cowboy tipsters!).

If you wish to put 2 points on please do,for it is not my intention to interfere with any ones staking plans, yes i know it is only jest and i certainly like it.
Contacted Isiris said that they had won £20,000 the previous year to level stakes, then he said 5 points on each bet, said to him you only won £4,000 he would not have it and he even asked if i wanted to join, membership fee at the time £1,950, your the accountant you do the math’s value or not!!!
Cheers(on that note look forward to that pint when you are next in Sheffield).
      Colin.

      1. There are plenty of pay based on profit tipsters out there, which seems to me to give them more motivation to be successful rather than charge a fee.

Re Traders impacting markets. They may well do? I have been to a few Traders Conferences where the likes of Caan Berry and Dan Easton etc have spoken. The Betting Guy (podcaster) Dean Booty is the latest flavour as he is sponsored by Betfair. Anyway, a lot of the guys there (almost all men) that I have chatted to to pick their brains in the breaks are mostly part time/work at home IT guys who like a bet and have maths/programming skills. There are a few guys who have had a redundancy pay off and have got into trading. A lot of them do not really know what they are doing in my opinion. This breed of punter does seem to be growing each day.

Colin, you keep giving Accountants a bad name! I have been one for many years and have sat on various committees of my professional body. Some of them are nice people and a few, just a few, are not that boring. Although some do watch paint dry for excitement.

        1. That’s interesting feedback Martin re traders and would make sense. I used to always think the traders on betfair had inside knowledge and almost feared taking them on. My betting has improved since I assumed the majority don’t know what they are doing. (Obviously just before the off is different).

My philosophy is, if you see a good price, take it – simple as that. If you see £500 available to back more than half an hour before off time at a certain price, do not assume the price will drift. If anything it’s more likely to go the other way. That’s my experience anyway.

Haha will definitely do that pint next time Colin. Late Feb is likely – looking forward to it.

        2. You are confusing real accountants with cowboy accountants Martin. They come over here and ride roughshod through everyone’s books causing chaos and mayhem in the true cowboy tradition.

          Shouldn’t be allowed! 😉

      2. 4000 points a year equates to an average of almost 11 points a day, every day. I don’t think so. Must be those cowboy accountants again.

    1. Unlucky with the golf Colin, just missed out on a win & a place on the final hole. Still a nice profit for the place. Thanks for what you do here.

Thank you for your kind thoughts, go in Sat 26th Jan at 10am and the op is in the afternoon, worse day of the week, my son will be up Sat and he will put up my bets on the day, thankfully racing is starting a little later but they may not be up at normal time, and me a crash course for me putting the Betfair bets on myself.
Should be out Tuesday at sometime so if you follow the golf if possible it will be tues or weds all being well.
        Thanks again

A couple of interesting races at Wolves tonight but far too early to take the race markets seriously. Back about 1.00 and then 4.00 with the late update.

        1. Well i got 6/1 without shopping about at o’clock this morning so whatever you think is fairest.

Great start to the week anyhow

    1. well done Hugh, I should have lifted your pick for the through the card, damn! I need to get into habit of flicking through comments from you esteemed contributors for those! never in doubt. He was ‘unexposed’ over fences with only 4 runs, i’ve long given up trying to get these older horses right so well done. It was a mediocre race and the yard showing more signs of life in recent days, first winner since 25th July from only 27 runners mind, some placed horses in recent days, could be the beginning of a few more going in. He enjoyed every minute of that and jumping of everything in behind went to pieces.

  16. I keep staring at this one and decided I can’t leave him out at the prices:

    Holly Bush Henry Warwick 14:40 1pt e/w 16/1

  17. Only the one for me at Sedgefield and it’s what I’d call a borderliner so I’m putting it up for 1/2 pt win and 1/2 pt place and that’s how it will be recorded. It’s currently trading around 26.0 (Win), so should be decent EW odds.

    Sedge’ 3.30 Massini Man…….. 16.0

    1. Just the one race @ Wolves…..

      5.25 Without Destination 10.0

Isn’t fancied at the market at the moment but Marco Botti does well here with deb’s showing a healthy profit to BFSP. The 1st & 2nd fav’s aren’t too much to get excited about either, so in with a chance if ready to go.

  20. Ref. Andrew Gilmore, Colin and Tim – Clive Holt.
I looked om my bookshelf and i have exactly the same books Andrew and agree with what you said. As far as what i have found is available on the INET. the ‘Red Book’ Be a successful Punter’ and the mainly light blue covered ‘Profitable winners always back Value winners’ are both available for Sale (Amazon i think?) Holt is also feature on a lot of Gambling sites too (thanks for the link to one Tim – great read) and a testimony to how effective he was was in one comment i spotted as recently as 3 years ago where a guy stated that he had followed the methods for years and typically was profitable at around 20 % ROI – damn good for such a seemingly dated method. B t w – is it today for Colin’s OP ? If so, or whenever, all the best and wish you the speediest recovery. John

    1. Hi John

Good to know the publications by Clive Holt are still around with a few of us…some of his methods of the time were eminently sensible and they were always an interesting read.

      1. I will look the guy up. They seem a good holiday read.

On an entirely different note, anyone remember the game Escalado? A horse racing game that you clamped to the table and it made a noise like a rusty gatling gun. It drove my dad mad.

        1. Escalado, Martin. Great days from my childhood. If the kids today saw that they’d think we were mad. Just googled it and watched a race on You Tube!! And you csn still buy it on Ebay

          1. I came from an extended family of point to point enthusiasts and it was a family party stalwart, late 1950s early 60s.

  21. Nothing for me at Warwick and only the one race of interest at Sedgefield which is awaiting a further inspection at 10.30. I’ll review the situation later in the morning but not expecting much if anything at all from me this afternoon.

A couple of interesting races at Wolves tonight but far too early to take the race markets seriously. Back about 1.00 and then 4.00 with the late update.

  22. 1.30 WARWICK : VIVA VITTORIA
    Just a nudge really …………….
Hits one of my noted systems for this trainer (the days since lto) for this trainer ( I think originally a ggeez suggestion)
Trainer is getting back into her groove again with her string.
Not a tip obviously but just a “musing”
At about 18/1 worth a dabble for me especially on my beloved 4tbp on betfair

Golf could be slightly effected for due out sometime Tuesday so could be up Tues or Wed for do not know what to expect after the Op only that the Nurse said with my positive attitude will be up and about sooner than later.
    Cheers
    Colin

    1. I bet you are running around like a 2 year old soon after the op…don’t worry about selections whilst you are recuperating..get well soon and we can all celebrate the future winners you post

      1. Good luck with the op on Saturday, you will soon be up and about running around like a spring chicken!!!

A word of warning!!! I went in for a major op, last October, in hospital for 2 weeks, once I got out and back home I was straight back into it. I some how had lost the thread and could not find a winner for love or money!! Even the football was against me. So be warned take your time and recover first.
        Best wishes,
        Solent

        1. Phil All ready on the poor run so after the anaesthetic could be an improvement, pleased to hear that your wife has had success after her double hip op and to be honest everyone that i have spoken have had the same success.
Pain have it every day all day and over the past couple of years dancing down town my mates on many occasions have said nothing wrong with you,you are putting it on, for me having played football and horse riding you get on with pain only took prescribed Codeiene for 3 weeks did not touch the pain so why take them the Consultant said really after showing me the X ray and there was no Cartlidge left on the ball joint, just bone on bone, and the right is not sparkling.
For the wife doing a good line in ball and chain and of course the best seller the chastity belt Ha Ha, only kidding!!!
Cheers and thank you in your support
          Colin

The last 10 weeks have been a nightmare for not being able to walk very far in one go although checked my app last Weds and had walked over six miles not enjoying being restricted to home so if i am able then will put the bets up for it does not take long and i do enjoy the time sifting through the bets to see if we can beat the bookies however not enjoying the poor run of Colin’s bets feel he must be a Cowboy!!!
          Cheers
          Colin

          1. Colin… joking apart you will never have as much fun without taking your clothes off as you will riding a good rodeo horse. When I bought my first Western horse (Steamboat), the woman who bred him told me when we were loading him up that once you’ve had one of these, you’ll never look at another horse. We all laughed at the time thinking it was the best sales patter we’d ever heard, but thirty years later and she was so right.

If a western horse doesn’t get your pulse racing, it’s too late cos you’re already dead. Just remember to add it to your bucket list once you’re up and at ’em with your new hip sorted.

          2. Tim
Mick Fitzgerald does not agree with you after winning the National said it was better than sex, cannot remember if he was divorced at the time or did it come after the National quote? he must have been hammered for a few weeks back at Lambourn over the quote, can only imagine what the stable girls were saying to him.
            Colin.

          3. But how many of us are ever gonna get the chance to do that? Not much chance of me ever making the weights let alone getting a ride. Like I said…. put it on yer bucket list. You will not be disappointed. If you were 20 years younger I’d be telling you not to rule out bull riding either.

Great buzz when you get to stay on long enough to hear the bell ring. Yee Haw! 🙂

    2. Colin – My wife had two full hip replacements last year & is like a new woman now (let’s hope she doesn’t start looking for a new man!). The difference in her is quite remarkable & I’m sure that the same will happen with you. I had a hip resurfacing a few years ago & neither of us appreciated the pain we were in until after the operations. I’m sure that the same will happen to you – but the proof, as they say, will be in the pudding!

  24. I keep staring at this one and decided I can’t leave him out at the prices:

    Holly Bush Henry Warwick 14:40 1pt e/w 16/1
