2.Any Tips/Notes (Daily Tips/Festival Tips/other thoughts)

Daily Tips (2018: 28/322,100p, -22.2 ) Big Race/Festival Tips (2018: +147)

None today, no ‘big races’ I wish to attack. From the 27th there’s the Welsh National and a couple of big handicaps from Leopardstown I have some stats/trends for – so there’s those to hopefully look forward to in the coming days.

Best of the Jumps Stats Quals? (27/108,52p, +32.9 , all 1 point win)

11.55 Sedge – Theatre Act – 8/1 (betfS/WH) 15/2 (gen)

2.50 Hunt – Quantum of Solace – 6/1 (gen)

3.20 Weth – Lester Kris – 12/1 (betfS/PP) 10/1 (gen)

2.55 MRFire Ahead – 10/1 (gen) (added 08.47)

that will be all for ‘best of’ tips, as of 08.47, write ups on the way…

Theatre Act – this mare looked rather overpriced to my eyes here in what looks an open enough race, although one filled with quite a bit of dross also. Her last two runs have been her best for some time. Two starts ago she chased home a 102 rated Dalgleish improver, who’d go on to win his next two and won his last of those off 115. She ran in a deep enough C2 LTO, 17lb out the handicap, rated 82 effectively racing off 99, surrounded by animals 110+. She was a clear second there for a long way, and until 2 from home, and that was very heavy that day. Her last win was here off 102 in Jan 17. Her last run here was Jan 18 off 90 where she came an ok second place. She drops into a C5 (3 classes down from LTO), Sean Q keeps the ride which given he was on LTO is a positive for me), conditions are fine (and she stays a tad further which may be no bad thing today) and she will be right up there- now McCain’s is out, there’s a chance SQ tries to make all, or at least will be in a ‘no excuses’ position, especially if slowly run. She is only 7 still and while fairly exposed should be taking advantage of this mark at some point around here, hopefully today. Millie The Minx is a clear danger but does have a stamina question in soft. She could be fine and may win well again, but I was happy to take on at 5/2. These two could be fighting it out and with any luck the selection outstays her. I was happy to leave the rest, I suppose of those Strike West at 8s looked interesting enough. If the selection repeats either of her last two runs, I think she’ll be bang there after the last.

Quantum of Solace – I thought this mare was the most interesting one in this race, given how unexposed she is over fences – it looks a weak enough handicap chase to me and I was happy to take on/leave the top two in the market . FOB is 4/14,7p in handicap chases at the track in recent years, 3/6,4p at this distance and I thought it significant that a) young C Brace was on having ridden her LTO and b) Fergal returned to Huntingdon with her given she’d raced over fences here for previous connections. This one has ability and ran well over hurdles LTO on her return after a break. Her breeding suggests she’s crying out for this sort of trip now, if not further, so I thought the step up may bring about improvement. The ground is an unknown – there’s enough GS around Huntingdon today it seems so I wont be using that as an excuse. She’s mainly been kept to decent ground in her whole career so it’s an unknown and hard to say with certainty that she doesn’t handle cut. It’s her first run in a C5 handicap chase, and some of her form has worked out well – her win three starts back at Perth has produced 5 winners since, suggesting that she should be thrown in off this mark over fences if/when getting it all together. Her run LTO was the best she’d settled and I get the impression she doesn’t stand much racing – so you have to win after a break or on her next couple of starts. Her best career runs so far have come on 2nd and 3rd starts after a break, and hopefully she can keep that profile going. If that last run was over fences she’d be half the price here, so i’ll roll the dice at 6s.

Lester Kris – I’m hoping this is the Festive Hammond plot job that will pay for all of their presents etc. I could be wrong and he could just be moderate but he received an ‘interesting’ ride LTO to my eyes, in a novice hurdle. It was the horses first run for the yard and first after a short break- he could have finished within 3L there of two horses rated a few pounds higher- his jockey went very easy on him having held onto him for a while- I’m not sure he really picked up the stick and it was just one of those runs which visually looked as though there could be plenty in the tank. He now makes handicap hurdle debut at one of the few tracks where the trainer has success with such types. He may prefer the softer ground, the more galloping nature of the track, and the main man is onboard. He’d have had a few options for Hammond today I think and I hope it’s significant that he’s on him here. It looked a very winnable race to my eyes and he was one of the few horses in here that I thought could have more in hand. I think he either bolts up or i’ve not read it very well and he’s just not any good. He has some fair flat form to his name and could now be maturing with age. Hammond will get wins out of him, hopefully starting today!

Fire Ahead – the market may guide. I think this is a plot and will have been the plan. I say that because Williams has won the Market Rasen boxing day novice handicap hurdle twice in recent years, the last of them with Amber Gambler-  the selection and that horse both have the same owner. Amber G was winning this on his second start of the season, having PU on his first, and this one has taken a similar path. I suspect he needed it LTO although was nibbled at, but wasn’t given a hard time. He drops in class here, TOB keeps the ride, and in what looks a very open race, I thought we may now suddenly see a completely different horse. Ian Williams is 4/14,8p with all novice handicap hurdles at the track in his career to date, 2/8,4p with TOB, 2/6 in class 5. Much like the Hammond poke above, he could win very well, or be useless. For both of them the odds allowed the play. He’s lightly raced and there should be more to come one day – hopefully i’ve picked the right day!

Elsewhere…well I had a good look at Dorking Cock but concluded 5s wasn’t overly generous and I didn’t like his run LTO having watched it. I could have read it all wrong but i wanted to have seen more, at that price. I could have him very wrong and he’s a similar profile to the two above- he could now have stacks in hand on handicap debut, up in trip, a more galloping track – and he could be learning to settle with racing. He didn’t show much LTO though so we shall see. He would be annoying but at 5s I just left him.

I have had a nibble on Danced Every Dance in the 3.15 Sedge at 16s last night – it’s a weak mares bumper but I thought she was interesting for a bang in form yard who target the track, including in bumpers. They had a mares bumper winner at Carlisle a couple of days back having her first career run and this one is related to some bumper winners. Her saddle slipped when last seen so that can be ignored. She could be useless but she could take this, and pay for the Boxing Day beer tab! Do with that as you please.

  1. Happy Christmas Josh, Nick, Colin, the Martins, Stewart, Chris and all other brave souls who post on this amazing site. May you and yours have a peaceful and happy time, and here’s to a great 2019 full of successful micro angles and brilliant tips.

    All the very best.

  2. Josh , Nick and all, have a great Christmas. Thank you for your sterling effort this past year. Upwards and onwards for the year ahead.

  3. Merry Christmas Josh and fellow RTP members!

Managed to find a spare couple of hours to look at the King George and think Coneygree rates as a cracking bet at 33/1. Had a go ew but think it goes close and certainly value with a lot of questions at the top of the market. Looked a return to form LTO and read an article saying last year it had problems (over reach and wind issue) that they now say are fixed and LTO looked to prove that point – giving a stone to the only two that beat it in a G3 at Cheltenham. Was leading for a long way and the other two went past 2 out, so the step down in trip on a flatter track should be in its favour + should come on for that run. Certainly has the pedigree having won a Gold Cup as a novice which is pretty rare and has destroyed a field at Kempton in its early days so the track suits. 11 year old now, but lightly raced due to injuries – Politilogue a 7 year old has actually had more races. Hopefully gallops them into the ground from the front.

    1. It would be wonderful if you were right James. He is a marvellous old warrior but I fear that even if he has a great day his old legs may let him down for pace at the business end.

  4. Merry Christmas everyone!

Looking forward to eyeing up those Boxing Day cards from tomorrow. Anyone know when the bookies price up and if there is a period that they don’t take bets on the 25th?

    1. Firstly Merry Christmas to all. Looking forward to a good Christmas dinner at home and then racing and football on Boxing Day.
The cards are up on geegeez for Kempton and for the other meetings but we need the declarations to kick in to eliminate the non runners. The fields at Kempton are not big. Hendo has one in every race at Kempton.

I think that they will form markets later today as they will want to have a chunk of Christmas Day off and then come back to it that evening, Mind you they will likely be stingy in pricing up.

Re Coneygree, every horse has its price. I just think he might bounce if he runs? I can see the angle where he goes off in front and has a go if he is OK to go. I cannot see Waiting patiently not needing it after 312 days off. Plus he is likely not top grade, much like Politologue.

  5. Don’t remember the odds ever coming down during Xmas day. Once they are up they are up. I’m guessing a lot of the price cuts are automated these days.

  6. all the shopping done and the mother in law is staying with us over christmas so i have a bit more time to browse the boxing day racing, i have looked at what i think is the most interesting race betting wise at each meeting. these are just my first thought’s and will be looking again in more depth but here’s a few i think may be worth looking at.
Wincanton 1-25. Monbeg Theatre 8-1 drops back into a handicap after 2 pretty good runs at grade 2
Sedgefield. 11-55. Danceintothelight 5-1 this is his level and should make a bold bid from the front
Market Rasen 2-20. Shady Glen 14-1 was badly hampered lto and might be worth another go, i also like Bob Ford’s profile at 14-1
Huntingdon 1-40. tempted to give Kingston 10-1 another shot at a c4
Fontwell 2-25. Sussex Ranger 14-1, don’t know what has happened to him lately on best form he would walk this but has been very poor last 2 runs.
Wetherby 2-45. Sakhee’s City 33-1 is a real tempter at the price likes it at Wetherby but trip may be a bit to far.
Kempton 3-05. well i have had a small ew on Coneygree 28-1 sky 4 places, but Native River 6-1 and Thistlecrack 6-1 are both favourites of mine and are probably worth a go as i can’t see them finishing outside the first 4 but i’m holding fire.
hope you all have a great Christmas and a happy and profitable new year.

  7. Only joined early December and already loving it. It is certainly different and gives you the chance to vary your approach and spend differing amounts of time depending on circumstances. Would like to thank Josh for his great help, and patience, in dealing with my queries (i m very analytical) Delighted to see one or two good ones go in and well done Nick with the 2 on Saturday – will be following you and Colin very closely – all credit to you for your results. Hope to contribute and give something back more over forthcoming months once i have sussed it all out. Would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a brilliant and of course very profitable New Year 🙂

  8. It really is a cracking site, can only join everyone else in thanking the regular contributers and of course Josh for his tireless efforts.

Just a quick one on the handicap chase system, I’ve noticed those that are competing for lower prize money than LTO have performed quite poorly and are at best breakeven to betfair starting price (there could be some logic in that as if they are improving horses, why would trainer’s be lowering their sights?). Anyway, those backing systematically may want to consider that.

My tweaked system operates as follows:

    Race type: handicap chase
BF Starting Price: 1 to 10
Prize money vs LR: same or higher
    Age: 7 to 9
H(Run) NH Race Type: NOT 0 to 2
Days since last Run: 1 to 20
    LR placing: First

    Last 4 years 158 wins from 507 runs, + 165 point to BFSP, 33% ROI, A/E 1.32, chi 16.4.

    1. So, are you going to post up qualifiers in future so that we can see the system in action?

I have had a look on Oddschecker and there is a bit of value about in places. I like:
11.55 Sedgefield, Strike West at 10/1; 1,20 KP Dell Oro at 8/1 and 3.40 KP Colonial Dreams 8/1. They all seem to be BOG for those who are still able to get BOG.

      1. Thank you Martin. Josh does already post qualifiers of a very similar system under the banner “handicap chase starting points” but this is just a refined version. That said, I’m more than happy to post qualifiers to this version and track success to morning prices with BOG.

I will run with the criteria above and add in “class vs LR: same or higher”.

With regards to the price, I will only post those 8/1 or less as that should pick up most the winners and hopefully eliminate a lot of losers (for example those going off at a BSFP >16 are 0 from 46 since start of 2015).

    2. Hello Francis, I’ve been playing around with your parameters (ooh missus!) and one tweak I made which increases profit without changing your fundamentals is add one day to days since last run making 1 to 21.

This brings in horses on Saturday presumably that ran exactly 3 weeks before and couldn’t find an opportunity the previous 2 Saturdays.

      172/564, +181.42 bsp, roi 32.17%, a/e 1.32, chi 116.99.

      1. With my new figure of 1 to 21 days since last run I then revisited the horse age still with your bsp price cap.

7yo show a loss, the profitable range is now 8 to 11.

        163/511, +217.95 bsp, roi 42.65%, a/e 1.43, chi 26.87.

        1. That’s a very canny addition Chris. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

You will see my comment about same class or higher below. If you add that in, 1 to 21 DSLR and age range 8 to 11, I’m left with:

          141 wins from 409 bets, +211.66 BFSP, 51.75% ROI, 31.99 chi

That will do for me – I will conduct the test on that basis.

(Adding back in 7YO or increasing price range can get you further points but will impact ROI).

          1. I will start posting qualifiers and tracking results properly at start of 2019 but there would be one qualifier tomorrow:

            1.05 Huntingdon – midnight mustang (7s general)

    1. Thanks Francis. I’ll have a dive into those pointers /tweaks when I get a moment. It’s working well certainly as starting points and much like Chris’ approach to LTO winning hurdlers I suspect there may be an approach using a staking plan etc. But anyway to improve it systematically would be good. I’ll take a look but sounds like you’ve homed in on something.
It would make sense that those LTO winners in rules above dropping in grade/level of oppo are over bet.

  9. Happy Christmas to everyone. My advice as always is to take it easy on the betting front over the week ahead, there is a long year coming to make plenty of profit

  10. Merry Christmas all! Thanks to absolutely all of you for your contributions to a site which is peerless! Well done Josh and Cheers!!!

  11. Merry Xmas to everyone and your families. Here’s looking forward to a very prosperous year on this fantastic site.

    Chris R.

  12. I am busy tomorrow so wanted to get these out today.

Lostnfound Fontwell 12:15 1pt e/w-Had some decent novice form last year before being highly tried but now returns to a more suitable level and more importantly back on soft ground. The jockey booking was eye catching given he rides the track better than most.

Desiremoi D’Authie Wincanton 12:20 1pt e/w-Form of his Warwick race back in May has worked out well and has been running consistently since. Drops down in class. James Bowen is 3/9, 5p for the trainer and I thought was an eye catching booking.

Daario Naharis Huntingdon 12:35 1pt e/w-This one looks way too big given his bumper form and the step up in trip will suit as will the softer ground given he was a 3m PtP 2nd on soft.

Potters Sapphire Huntingdon 13:40 1pt e/w-Another who looks to be on a decent mark given his novice form. Would have needed it last time but still ran with credit. Was 3rd at the track to a couple of very good horses and the ground won’t be an issue and should go well.

Just Georgie Market Rasen 14:20 1pt e/w-Would have needed it LTO but before that he was 2nd to a horse who than went 3rd in a class 2 at the Scottish National meeting and is now rated 16lbs higher. Looks well suited for this sort of marathon and the ground should suit. Trainer has won this before and is in good form. Should be able to lead or race prominently and thought he had a good e/w chance.

Suggestion Wetherby 15:20 1pt e/w-I have been paying attention to this one since his 5th at Uttoxeter back in May which has thrown up multiple winners and am convinced he is well treated. I thought it was interesting that they bring him to Wetherby which is the scene of his only hurdle win. He is the only course winner in the race. They apply first time cheekpieces on here. The trainer won the race last year and is in absolutely cracking form. I would ignore his run last time as it was in heavy which he didn’t appear to handle.

  13. Evening Josh and all,
    Can I ask a question?
When I am researching on HRB,I follow your lead and select,Track,Date (year),Date (month)then click proceed.
On the following page I click (Dig).
Is there anywhere on the dig page where I can select (with runners today?).
I find myself looking through loads of trainers that have no runners on that particular day that meet my criteria.
    All help gratefully received.

      1. Andy,

In the options running across the top of the page, you should see one named “Now”, that gives today’s qualifiers and after around 3pm it will give tomorrow’s too.

        1. That’s what I was going to say! Cheers Chris. Yea that’s the only way to get today’s/tomorrow’s quals but of course relies on you having the rules set up. Sadly I don’t think there’s a dig function for say /trainers + those with runners today. There isn’t a runners today option in terms of the system research options I don’t think. So you couldn’t search for trainers within a system just with runners today. You’d have to select the trainers and click Now to find qualifiers

          1. Hi Josh,
Do you mean that after I have my long list of trainers,if I then click the Now icon it will reduce my list to just trainers with runners on the next day?
I’ll have a crack at I think you mean later today.

  14. Christmas greetings all. Fancies for tomorrow, tempered by my having a very large and fine Xmas dinner courtesy of Mrs Curtis, plus copious quantise of wine, so caution advised….

  16. i’m limiting myself to 4 selections 3 from my musings above and one other, iv’e dismissed Sussex Ranger as i feel 7-1 is to short considering his recent form might have had a go at 14’s, i’m leaving Kempton completely alone . Kingston just can’t seem to win a C4 and i’m not fully convinced by Bob Ford , cue all those hosing up 🙂 . Danceintothelight is a n/r.
    which leaves:
Wincanton 1-25. Monbeg Theatre 9-1 1/2 pt ew BV 4 places
Market Rasen 2-20. Shady Glen 20-1 1/2 pt ew BV 4 places
    Wetherby 2-45. Sakhees City 22-1 1/2 pt ew B365 4 places
    Wetherby 3-20. Suggestion 11-1 1/2 pt ew B365

  17. A couple with strong TJC stats I’ve had a play on today are:

3.45 Lim – Hurricane Junior 10/1 (won last 3 flat races together at Limerick,
    strong overall record together also)

12.45 MR – MrsGrey 25/1 (Trainer and Jockey have won last 4 hurdles races together)

  18. Hope everyone had a great Christmas day, mine was filled with all sorts of drama, but, today is all about the racing!
I grab the big race by the short and you know whats..
    15:40 Kempton
    POLITOLOGUE 11/2 gen 1pt win
Well, if you remember, P Nicholls was in form before racing stopped on Saturday. I am hoping my heart doesn`t rule my head today, in respect of me wanting a new grey for us all to fall in love with on Boxing day! I have watched this horse “live” a couple of times and he does remind me of Dessie, we shall see?? He has the heart of a lion and doesn`t go down fighting, if the big boys fail then this could definitely be his day! Sam TD is an interesting booking also, a plot me thinks?
BRISTOL DE MAI 15/2 1pt win
Well, another grey, yes, another maybe horse, yes, but at twice the price of the favourite, who he subsequently beat at Haydock (again), am willing to take a chance on the fact everyone has said MB will have come on for his run, well, what about BDM? Yes he clouts a fence and maybe he isn`t as good going RH? At the price though, will take a chance.

Well, of the rest, will leave that to the other people on here, as always, good luck and hope all horses and jockeys come back safe and sound, enjoy your Chritmas and New Year punting.

    1. I cant see why Bristol De Mai will now run well away from Haydock? I dont like Politologue, stay or not, as I think he is nowhere near as good as Might Bite and Native River. I think Thistlecrack just cannot jump well enough in this grade and should go back to hurdles. So I have had a saver on Native River at 6/1 having backed Might Bite at 7/2.

Apart from my three selections earlier I like Lake View Lad at 9/2, 2.10 Wetherby and Eureu De Boulay at 3/1, 2.40 Sedgefield. Both 2 points win.

      Good luck.

        1. Good luck Stewart. Think you’ll get a good run from those two. I’ve very strong views on MB at those prices certainly. Hope I’m wrong but I didn’t like his head carriage of jumping at all at Haydock and don’t buy any of the excuses. We will find out soon enough. Tin hat on for when he wins by 5!
BDM has had one fewer race than last year and I thought they found a problem with him after the race. In any case he clouted one heading out second time and that did for him. He could just be a better horse now. May all happen too quick for Native River but he won’t be far away. I’ve no strong views but wouldn’t be shocked if you’ve landed on the right one. This could go to one or the two young pretenders who may improve for conditions..but this will be unlike anything theyve run in before. Should be a cracker.

      1. Those two got me out of trouble today. Far too many meetings to focus.

Good Cheltenham trials for Santini, Native River and even Buveir D’Air, on a course and ground that likely did not suit them. Might Bite dropped out tamely but I think that it was a race for bad runs and fallers and I would not get carried away bout the winner. Good to see Coneyfree get up and jog on. See you at the Festival, after I have sorted the Welsh National winner.

    1.05 Robero BOG 5/1
    2.15 Champagne Rules BOG 11/2

Belated Merry Christmas to everyone, must admit enjoyed the three days with no racing and totally switched off.

  20. Merry Christmas to all RTP members. Thanks for all your efforts josh, as always very much appreciated.

  21. Today’s selections
    2.00 Winc 1pt e/w Kilfinichen Bay
    2.35 Winc 1pt win Dicosimo
2.35 Winc 1pt Win Beau Bay

  22. Josh
In response to your reply to Stewart the words for me is
Horses for Courses Haydocks extra stiff fences did not suit MB and their will be no Excuses if he does not run his race at Kempton.
Interview from Mick Fitzgerald the other day said that he believes that Nicky Henderson had not got got him fit enough for Haydock and he expects MB to win the King George,we will see,and with Mick being an ex stable jockey to Nicky Henderson and still has open access to the stables then take his word that MB will do himself justice today certainly hope so.
Where did my three blank racing days go!!! Haha
PS will not be able to see the race live will have to watch it later, for Sheff Utd are playing the Rams and will be cheering Harry Wilson,Liverpool loan player scoring the winning goal all being well.

  23. After feeling the pain of Sussex Ranger and Paddleyourowncanoe winning( who both me and Josh tipped up last time) nice to see the NAP smash them to pieces (I may be a little drunk)

  24. Some great tips today from Nick, Colin and Martin. Well done guys, and a huge thankyou. Keep up the good work!! Best wishes, Tom.
