With Donny off. What do people think of Faugheen? Matt Chapman thinks hes the best hurdler ever.But does his form support that?
Not for me. A very good if somewhat fragile hurdler yes. A look at what he has beat is not that impressive.
In the Neptune he beat Ballyalton 4.5 lengths. Highest O.R achieved by Ballyalton 143.
In the Ascot Hurdle he beat blue Fashion 3.75 lengths. Blue Fashion highest O.R 152.
He has won two Christmas Hurdles beating Purple Bay 8 lengths and The New One 7 lenghths. The New One has been beaten in the Christmas Hurdle by three other horses on three different occasions.
He won the Champion Hurdle beating Arctic Fire by an ever diminishing 1.5 lengths. Arctic Fire is another fragile horse and only managed to win 5 times out of 20 attempts. ‘Arctic’ won the County off 158.
He was beaten by the ill fated Nichols Canyon and on his last run beat Jezki by 15 lengths. Jezki went on to be beaten by 25 lengths next time out.
There is no doubt Faugheen is an impressive looking animal,not a great jumper but has a tremendous engine. He has had his problems and has beat everything bar ‘Nichols’ put before him. He will be ten in a few days time and will probably win easily today,although if Cilaos Emery is fully tuned up it might not be the cakewalk people think it will. If he gets to Cheltenham in March the slick jumping younger Buveir D’air will be his biggest test ever and at ten i fear he will be beaten.
