A brave run from Minella Daddy, no complaints there. In recent weeks the ‘stats’ shortlisting approach for those big races has found the winner of the Hennessy, the 20/1 second in the Becher, and two of the placed horses in the Caspian Caviar gold cup last week, plus Minella today. So , a win, 3 seconds, and a 4th. Knocking on the door. (as a ‘satrting point’ they have done ok, and one day I will home in on the right one) Minella may or may not have been unlucky- I missed it live but he was hampered by a loose horse before the last, unable to be thrown at the fence and ping it as he did the second last – my hunch is that had he been able to do so he would have landed running a few more lengths ahead than he did – but that ultimately the defeat may have been more heartbreaking and he would have probably been done on the line, given how the winner finished. Well done to Martin who put old Regal Encore up at 20s- and enigmatic character it seems, he was on a going day today- and given his past form (Festival bumper 2nd in 2013,that Punchy run 3 starts ago) he was entitled to do that from his mark at some point. The yards horses were in good recent form also. Apparently the last twice he has been hampered at various times and has never felt right. That is racing, and they are animals at the end of the day. Well done to connections. I wasn’t as close to finding him as I like to be when a winner goes in I didn’t back. Unlike the Gordon 20/1 winner at Wincanton (have nearly moved on from that) that I was close to having a dart on, I wasn’t anywhere near on him. We move on..
