YOUR SUNDAY READ: PROFITING FROM MAN UNITED’S MISERY

***

A blank Saturday, the first for a while and we were due one! Sadly Harry The Viking ran no sort of race but am happy enough with the selection. Isaacs ran ok and got up for third but the 12yo 33/1 winner had flown by then. ‘Conti’ did what he was always going to do if bouncing back to his best and that was fun to watch. One of those ‘hindsight’ winners – why didnt I ‘lump on’ at 3s! A big price in context of how he won.

The only reflective point is on Bishops Road. Maybe one that got away. In the trends shortlist of 3, a micro system qualifier – I was rather quick to dismiss him. Saying straight up I want one with proven stamina. But, all those with proven stamina did have questions also. He was 8/1, a price where you can overlook something. He was also entered in the Grand National, which says everything about what the Lee’s thought to his stamina. My good racing friend Ben Aitken did put him up at Narrowingthefield, the methods he uses leaving him in no doubt he would probably stay. So, maybe a bit too quick there to dismiss him simply because I had no idea about stamina. But, he had yet to prove he wouldn’t stay – hadnt tried – and in that context, the trends, the micro, the price of 8/1 – Clearly I should have considered him more seriously. Always trying to improve in these parts!

Still, a +8 point week so I won’t complain too much.

TIPS

Nothing tomorrow. I am going to have a day off and give the brain/eyes a rest.

Bashford Ben runs in the 5pm Market Raisen – I dont know what price he will be. There is some pace in this race on paper and I said I wont back him until he runs at Carlisle again. He keeps going off too quickly. So, do with that info as you please. Maybe this is his race, but he may want more of a test than at this track. Unsure!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  1. Not a bad day for me,had different gravey at15/2 and few other losers,James evans has one in the 5pm at market rasen but no price at 2/1,yes its rare occurrence for a blank sat for the blog,no harm in that, you might be thinking was too easy there for a while lol

    1. Well done Gerry. Haha, indeed! The betting gods have a way of reminding you that this is a tough game! Bishops Road was that betting gods horse I think! Bar stamina w,he ticked soo many boxes! Doh. There will be more days like that,it has been a rather good run! Glad you had a good day. Different Gravy was certainly well named!

Could probably replace Nico in all of the hendo/gerraghty trainer/track combos I think. Likes of Kempton and I think Ascot were happy hunting grounds for them.

  2. Yes stable sees to be coming to the boil now in advance of Cheltenham and Aintree, considering most of his horses would prefer better going

    1. Indeed it was. Not impossible to find on reflection – just had to overlook his age, days since run, and all those Ps! But, you got a good price if you did! (not me sadly) 75/1 on BFSP I believe!

      1. yep, I went straight back to the Geegeez Cards/Instant Expert/Speed Figure and went ‘Damn’! Using those tools many may have had a nibble, and I can see why – in Hindsight! Yes, quite – ‘experts’ indeed!

  4. I suppose it was quite likely in hindsight that Bishops Road would improve at the longer trip. This was only his second run for this yard and first try at over 3m.

The Lee horses often enjoy a stamina test (probably because of their stiff uphill gallops at home). and it was pretty likely he would stay further than had seemed possible in the past.

    1. Indeed, yes quite agree with everything you have just said! all about asking the right questions and taking some time to think about the ‘what iffs’ what is doing something different etc – weighing up those with proven form, and those who could improve for doing something different. What a game! That is why we enjoy the challenge! – well, I do, in any case.

  5. Josh, I have just made an additional donation to you.

Not much today but The Bradstock’s usually like a stamina test and at FFos Las it should be pretty testing. I have had a bit at 20/1 on Robert’s Star for a punt.

I see that Harry Fry has another mare out today, Secret Door, that seems to be attracting money.

Also Man City have gone to 7/2 at Chelsea today. OK they will rest players but Chelsea are not exactly pulling up trees.

    1. Hi Martin, that is very kind of you, much appreciated. Good luck with your other picks, I haven’t looked but all sound intriguing and for sound reasons.

  6. Hey Josh! Your HRB say anything about Evan Williams on Sundays? I quite often note how has winners on Sundays… Got 3 today..

3.20 Mar R – Monyjean – was backed last time
    3.45 Ffo – Copper Birch – #cdg too
5.20 Ffo – Fille Des Champs – had a choice of 5 entries & this ones sire like heavy & trainer won race last year

  7. 3.45 at Ffos Las.

Tour Des Champs has a bit of class at the top of the weights but has been very disappointing on his last couple of starts. His jumping isn;t always the best though (although Ffos Las isn;t a great jumping test).

Horation Hornblower seems to be better on better ground. That puts me off massively as the ground is likely to be atrocious today.

Heronshaw could be interesting if the first time blinkers work. Unexposed over fences, on a decent enough mark, Paddy Brennan in form and goes well on heavy. Best price of 9/1 looks fine.

Ashford Wood looks a ridiculous price with bet365 – 40/1. Only had 1 start over fences (last time) and showed up OK before posibly tiring on his first run of the season. regular visor now back on (had cheepieces on last time). Has also won at Ffos Las before and has bits and pieces of form on heavy. He must be worth an each-way bet at 40/1! E/W bet.

I think Bereau Boru is solid though. Won last time on heavy (beating Emma Soda who has won since on similarly heavy ground). Looks feasibly handicapped off 124 on hurdles form and is unexposed over fences. 3/1 looks fair enough to me WIN bet.
