Cambridgeshire Meeting: Trainers to Follow/Avoid

I do find ‘big meetings’ tough – as you are supposed to really. The best horses, many of them primed to perform, and ultra competitive racing. Attacking them on a race by race basis can be tough and quite daunting – I have a limited number of race types I like to focus on and that I do ok in over time (3m+ handicap chases being the main one) . Since blogging more from last November I have learnt that less is more with these meetings so my ‘tipping’ will be limited again this meeting. I don’t bet a lot in G1 or 2 races so won’t start now, there are much finer judges than me of horses at the top of the tree.

However, there is another way -and that is to follow a select group of trainers using some micro angles. Clearly some trainers target their horses at certain meetings, and the Cambridgeshire meeting appears to be no different. This approach worked well at Cheltenham (esp with Paul Nicholls). So, let’s see if we can have some fun over the next few days, without having to over-think things, or bother looking at the horses!…

Trainers

All stats from 2010, starting with the trainer with the most winners, working down.

1.John Gosden

  • 8/45 since 2010.
  • All winners 12/1 or under
  • Listed Races: 4/12, 7 places – +13 SP
  • Maidens (all unraced horses) 2/5, 4 places

MICRO 12/1 or under in Listed Races or Maiden Races: 17 bets / 6 wins / 11 places

2. Andrew Balding

  • 16/1 or under: 6/28, 13 places (0/13, 1 place over 16/1)
  • Age 4+: 0/8, 3 places
  • MICRO?: 16/1 or under, Aged 2 or 3: 20 bets / 6 wins / 10 places/ +36.75 SP
  • With rules above, Salisbury/Sandown LTO: 4/5, 5 places +41.75 SP
  • 0/3, 0 places in handicap nurseries
  • 2/4, 3 places in maidens. (all had at least 1 career start already)
  • 3/8, 5 places in Handicaps. (exc nurseries)

MICRO – 16/1 or under, Aged 2 or 3, not nurseries?: 17 bets / 6 wins / 10 places / +39.75 SP

He does appear to have a good year followed by a ‘bad year’, he had a good year last year so maybe a blank this time round. No logic there mind!!

3. William Haggas

  • 0/10, 0 places above 16/1.
  • 0/11, 2 places in handicaps
  • 16/1 or under, Non handicaps: 6/25, 13 places , +22 SP
  • With those ‘rules’: Females – 3/8, 3 places +14 SP / Maidens 1/8, 3 places +9

  • 8/1 or under: 5/21, 12 places, +2.12 SP (+9 more points taking earlier prices)
  • No others ways in, but that is a general guide.

5. Saeed Bin Suroor

  • 0/8, 2 places over 14/1
  • 14/1 or under: 4/30, 11 places, -3.25
  • Handicaps: 2/8, 3 places, +10.75 SP
  • Of most interest: raced at KEMPTON LTO: 3/5, 4 places, 60% , +18.25 SP

No other ways in, I will be looking to see if he has any runners that raced on the sand LTO

6. Charlie Hills

  • overall 4/30, 8 places, does include one 28/1 winner
  • 4/1 or under, all races: 3/6, 4 places
  • G1 + G2: 2/8, 3 places. +26 SP
  • Raced at Donny LTO- 0/11, 3 places.

Just focusing on those supported in market appears to be the main ‘way in’.
