‘Festival’ TIPS

(to be counted in the 2018 ‘Festival’ ledger- members only, +92 points and counting, up with any luck…)

1.45 Aintree

Spirit of The Game – 1.5 points win- 10/1 (bet365) 9/1 (gen)

Massinis Trap – 1 point win – 20/1 (bet365) 18/1 (gen)

Jester Jet – 1 point win – 28/1 (betfS/PP) 25/1 (gen) (34.00 Betfair Exc as of 21.36)

Eaton Hill – 1/2 point win – 25/1 (gen)

I have been guided by my stats pointers below to some degree but also a few rating, having flicked through HRB/GG/Inform..and with that in mind…

Spirit of The Game looks as solid as they come. He brings some of the best handicap hurdle form into this race, if not the best on what is on offer. He just looks so solid in this line up and his run LTO suggests 20f, on soft, at this track, in a big field, could be ideal. He is clear top rated by some way on HRB and Inform Speed, with a few other pointers also. The numbers appear to back up the visual impression. He also hits one of my old Aintree micros (i appear to have a few saved up!) as a starting point… Aintree handicaps / 6YO / Top 10 in the weights / ran at Chelt Fest LTO… 10/51,19p, +142 in the last 7 years. (Ivanovich/ Jenkins / Lough Derg / Who Dares W also hit that one, maybe that is the place to focus… this horse is the most interesting of those to my eyes, in conditions) There isn’t too much more to say really. He is still lightly raced over hurdles and has improved for the headgear. There should be more to come one day and with any luck we see an impressive performance here. The sort of selection that will leave me down in the punting dumps if he runs a shocker! On paper, he looks a very very good bet in this sort of race, and 9/1+ is more than fair. He is the one I like most at the top end. Hopefully Cheltenham hasn’t taken it out of him.

Massinis Trap… well I kept this simple.. he was only one of three to hit my 10/10 pointers (which no doubt could not work this year), was 20s+ and has won and placed on his two starts over CD.  This trainer likes an Aintree raiding party, 2/13,6p with all runners here in the last 5 years. He has run well after similar breaks before and should appreciate the drop back in trip. I’d like to think this may have been the target and if he runs his race he may not be too far away.

Jester Jet… she doesn’t really know how to run a bad race bar that PU where I assume something was amiss. Her trainer is in red hot form and she comes here fresh, after a short break. She is top rated in GG speed which caught the eye and is still open to improvement, especially over this trip in a well run race. I thought 25s+ was a bit insulting to her chance really and I just couldn’t help myself. She stays further which could be no bad thing, especially if there is a top up of rain in the morning which is possible. If she runs her race she will keep going. Solid. I think. Certainly at the prices.

Eaton Hill…hmm, a toss up between this one and Landin (may have thrown a bit at him on Betfair) but he was 25s and for half a point I thought why not. He hits a few of my stats and comes here fresh. That break and the TT suggests they may have played around with something (hasn’t had a wind op) / found a niggle/problem. I suspect he may not be good enough here, is out of the handicap and clearly needs to take a massive step forward. He also needs plenty in the top half of the race to underperform. A sheepish 1/2 point but at 25s, given his place on my initial stats sift, I thought he could be worth chancing to cause an upset. Clear bottom weights are 1/9,3p in this, in the prev 20 renewals. Some method, to the increasing madness!

There’s a strong chance I may not have mentioned the winner but hopefully one of the first three can bolt up, if they don’t then Eaton Hill does and if he doesn’t Landin will! Leaving the Henderson/Tizzard/King horses in this may be foolish, but at the prices (bar Jenkins) I can just about live with it. I think they have a few too many questions in the context of price. It sometimes ends in tears when I tip horses that do not include any qualifiers in Section 1 above. Gulp. But, there we go.

Aintree Day 1

Hmmm… well the odd placed horse to cheer… Clyne EW at 33s-40s paid for most of my graded non handicap darts for change… 2nd and 3rd in the bumper at 33s and 10s, a shame the shorty Irish banker of that didn’t run out of steam, having pulled through most of the race. A game of fine margins. The Red Rum… well I wasn’t really close to the winner at 10s, and no problems with my darts, but none of them ran particularly well. Baby King travelled into it well but it’s a coin toss as to whether he then finds for pressure/is in the mood. My eyes were fixated on 16s+ shots really and that approach in that race will yield the odd nice winner over time. Grand Vision hated every moment of the Foxhunter to my eyes, he did not enjoy those fences one bit, but thankfully got up from his heavy fall. Darran’s free preview tipped the winner along with SP2A, so any followers of either of those had something to cheer.

Plenty of you had your eye in within the comments… maybe, time allowing, I will try and do a shortlist of the most mentioned horses! Martin W put up Bentelimar (you bugger! 🙂 ), Warren B with a couple of nice winners, Geegeez Chris with a couple and some decent placed horses, Darren chipped in and Martin C found a couple also. No doubt the odd other one I missed skimming through. Top work all. Same again Friday please, no pressure! 🙂

Aintree Day 2

work in progress…

Stats pointers/shortlists for the two handicaps…

1.45 Aintree

The first two 10/10 stats from the report… yet to win above listed level + had won over 2m3.5f leaves 7:

Spirit of The Games / Grand Partner / Eamon An Cnoic / Landin / Jester Jet / Massinis Trap / Eaton Hill

The final 10/10, ran in race with 11+ runners in LTO leaves just three from that list:

Spirit of The Games / Eamon An Cnoic / Massinis Trap.

Using some of the ‘other’ stats pointers would cross out those but they are not the strongest of stats and am not sure there is much logic to the 2nd-6th LTO stat and the placed numbers are decent.

*

4.05 Aintree

Using the 6 x 10/10 stats leaves 8…

OO Seven / Ballyalton / Flying Angel / Top Gamble / Ultragold / Vibrato Valtat / Rogue Angel / Devils Bride

*

Micro ‘System’ from guide (French Breds/Chelt LTO/Top 3)

2.20 – Style De Garde

2.50 – Coo Star Sivola / Terrefort (thumped Bentelimar at Hunt!)

3.25 – Balko Des Flos / Le Prezien / Min

*

Aintree Day 2 thoughts… a very brief flick through… (it has been pouring down in central Liverpool and if it’s the same up the road that ground could be on the heavy side)

1.45 – Spirit of the Game / Massinis Trap / Jester Jet / Eaton Hill / (Landin)

2.20 – Vision Des Flos

2.50 – Terrefort / Elegant Escape (pref for former I think, just)

3.25 – Balko Des Flos / Politologue

4.05 – Top Gamble / Ultra Gold / Shanahan’s Turn / Rogue Angle (tipped on free post, 1 point each)

4.40 – Hendo probably takes this, but for track side, Rocksana EW

5.15 – Al Dancer (NTD great record in race, all odds) / Skidoosh / Mercy Mercy Me

  • I backed Jenkins 145A before I knew it was a system bet as I felt that the switch to sideburns, this course and slightly easier oppos would benefit and 25/1 was too big for a horse of his ability.

  • 2.20 A ….. Henderson got off to a decent start and i like the chances of his Style De Garde in this , getting the 6lb 4year old allowance and a fair price at 11/1 …. considering he had another one entered as well (Claimantakinforgan) but just goes with Style De Garde is enough to make this of interest for me.
    Good Luck All

    • A 1-45 …. Sumkindofking 25/1 each way ….. a horse that has travelled so well in its races but failing to finish them off , probably taking a leap of faith that the wind op will make the difference but at the price im happy to take a punt that it can .

  • Looks to have been some early money, or perhaps a Pricewise selection, for Mystifiable from the Brennan micros. It was 40/1 with 365 earlier and is now 16/1 generally. Perhaps one to back first thing in the morning when so of the bookies go back to early prices for a short time.

  • Morning,

Well, after yesterday, i believe it is time to live by the sword etc…
As Josh has already stated, the logic was sound enough, just the horses didn’t live up to expectation.
I`m off down with my daughter today, she and some of her friends need a taxi (sorry, chaperone). I don`t mind, my eyes will be firmly fixed on the racing!
    13:45 Aintree
Tough race to fathom this, bit like the 16:40 yesterday?
    SPIRITOFTHEGAMES 10/1 365 1pt ew
A six year-old won this last year and there is plenty to like about this one in the opener who ran an excellent fifth in the Grade Three Randox Health County Handicap Hurdle behind stablemate and shock 33/1 winner Mohaayed and this further distance could be up his street as he also finished a close second over this trip in a listed race. He also finished third in the Betfred Hurdle at Newbury and with those bits of form and the soft ground favoured again i feel Dan Skelton’s horse will be a major player this time round.
    SUMKINDOFKING 25/1 365 1pt ew
Went off Co Favourite in this last year off a 4lb higher mark but under-performed. He ran well around this trip in three races last October to December then had a wind operation. He looks well handicapped and if the surgery helped he could go close. He is certainly worth an each way bet at small stakes at the current 25/1 on offer.
EATON HILL 25/1 gen 1 pt ew
Dual novice hurdle winner last term. Hasn’t gone on as hoped in 3 runs this time round but still early days and wouldn’t be a shock to see him fare better after a break. Tongue tied first time, which i always like, get`s more air into the horses lungs, all the reasons above for the two i have tipped alongside Josh are very logical.
    16:05 Aintree
BOUVREUIL 14/1 gen 1 pt ew
May be advantaged by exiting early when brought down at the Cheltenham festival , meaning he still probably arrives here relatively fresh as appeared the plan for the Grand Annual. A regular at the Spring gigs , and there is some winning form early in his career on testing ground when trained in France. A well-connected type who offers a solid each-way option.
KILCREA VALE 22/1 gen 1 pt ew
From Nicky Henderson yard the 8yo is a dual novice chase winner last term and arrives here on the back of a respectable effort at Kempton 2m 4.5f soft although 5th beaten 10 lengths but lost a shoe in running may have caused a bit uncomfortable, those Novice Chase wins came with Jeremiah McGrath in saddle as he was a regular in saddle but not been on horse for three of the four runs this season with Jeremiah getting back on board two races back at Ascot 2m 5f soft when he finished 2nd beaten 2 lengths in January, He’s down 4lbs since the start of season and goes off 135 and Jeremiah comes in for ride today with yard in form he could find his 3rd win chasing.
    ULTRAGOLD 16/1 gen 1pt ew
Shock 50-1 winner of this race last year producing a terrific effort over the National fences, he rediscovered his true colours as a stayer having been running over 2 miles previously. Ultragold ran very well in the trial over this course and distance on heavy going finishing second to another course specialist and one of my personal fancies for the Grand National Gas Line Boy. He ran badly twice subsequently where he doesn’t have a great record but he clearly enjoys this track and with a clear run I expect him to be in the mix again. Thought he would have gone for National ,but, hey ho what do i Know…haha

All the best with whatever you back today!

  • Well Might Bite done exactly what we all knew he was capable of and I won’t lose sleep over my two selections not running well. However the angle that gave Clyne gave a nice place at 40/1 (thanks to Josh for pointing out that it was from Gavin at Nag Nag Nag), which meant only a small 0.25 pt loss yesterday. Onto today 2 races for me at Aintree, one for now and one to follow later.

    2:50 Aintree:
    Shortlist: Coo Star Sivola/Captain Choas
Coo Star Sivola; has had two very impressive wins in his last two races, won comfortably at Exter in February over 3m in the soft and followed that up with a nice win in the Ultima at Cheltenham over 3m1f in the heavy. He looks to be in some serious form right now and I can see the hat-trick is on today. The leap from Hcp to Grade 1 is a concern but he has the ability. Captain Chaos; bit of a wild card here, purely based on his C&D win in the soft back in November in which he blitzed the rest of the field. In his last 4 has 3 wins although all coming in lower classes than today. Could be there at the end or nowhere near but may be worth some change.

    Selections:
Coo Star Sivola – 0.5pt EW (13/1 gen)
    Captain Chaos – 0.25pt EW (40/1 Bet365, 33/1 gen)

    Chris M 13/04/18 10:30 AM Reply

    • Note: Coo Star Sivola odds should be 13/2 gen.

Meant to say, from Monday currently on +3.5pts after yesterday’s results.

      4:40 Aintree:
Odd one, all my points land on the back end of the market. Some of those near the top are just not enough value for me. I may have a nibble on some of my shortlist but will be small stakes given their prices. Will keep the thought on each short.

Shortlist: Another Stowaway/Good Man Pat/Point of Principle/Uppetown Price
Another Stowaway; struggled to finish over 3m when odds on back in November but looked rejuvenated after wind op at Musselburgh, deserves another run at the trip. Should outrun runs but big improvement to get near at finish which he is capable of. Good Man Pat; Poor start over hurdles but won last 2, both with 4 runners so not much we can take from that. Has potential to raise game but would require big improvement today. Point of Principle; Got off the mark over hurdles back in February at Ascot but can’t tell how good that run was as the main contenders ran rather flat that day. This trip worries for me but you never know, I’ve seen stranger things. Uppertown Prince; Irish PTP winner who is going well under rules, although was thrashed by Chef Des Obeaux back in February so even though he is improving after each race, he will require a big step up in performace.

      Selections:
      Another Stowaway – 0.25pt EW (50/1 gen)
Good Man Pat – 0.25pt EW (50/1 gen)

Would I be surprised if any of these were nowhere near, the answer is no! I fully expect the winner to be in the top half of the market but I just can’t see value in them so some very outside pokes for me.

      • Going this morning recorded at 3.9 and looking at the map seems split between soft and heavy with a tiny amount of good/soft. Fly is going to have to be Spartactus to get round lugging 11st8lb.

        • Looks to me like they pulled VC anyway, Nick. There could easily be another 1 or 2 withdrawals by late tomorrow afternoon. Been fav for Scottish Nat since I saw prices up.

Shame (as far as GN goes) …you only have to watch a rerun of Chepstow to see the chance he may have had. 10s or thereabouts at Ayr doesn’t exactly look over enticing.

Has a big future likely whatever happens.

  • TIPS – two winners yesterday and we are only minus 0.75 points in April to date.

1.45 Landin 1 point each way 14/1. A very competitive race but I think this one has further improvement to come on some decent runs.
2.20 Minds Eye 1 point each way 20/1. Has some good form in Ireland and needs to show his best today.
4.05 Ultragold, another tricky race! I think he will go well at 16/1 with 5 places.
4.40 OK Corral, 3 points win at 10/3. Ran well at Cheltenham and can go forward again to win this.

It looks hard today. Good luck.

    • Sorry Martin jinxed Mind’s Eye for you. Everything I back right now finishing 1 off the places.

      • I backed Lalor as well, one from the tipster I suggested others sign up with, so the first two winners were no skill of mine. Still, the bookies have to pay me out regardless.

        • Very nice. I am not looking to add anyone right now but certainly will keep him in mind. Does he/she tip the night before or in the morning?

  • I had four winners today, all of which were in Josh’s tips or thoughts for the day. You are becoming the King of the Festivals Josh. Thanks again. Top work 🙂

  • Yea folks… please excuse me but I’m out in Liverpool for the evening. I mean at all times I’ll be able to see my flat but I plan to enjoy myself. There will be pokes on Sat but the week has been made after Friday. Enjoy your Friday evending. Josh

    • Hey Josh. Sorry to interrupt your evening, but I’m off to Chepstow tomorrow and my mate is going to Newcastle.

Any chance you could go through the cards for us before we set off at 8am? A video would be ideal.

      Thanks!

  • Lovely stuff Josh.

And I did forecasts and tricasts too.

The Tizzard result was special. My micro put just those two up for handicaps today so I really hit that winner and forecast.

I’ll have to come up there and buy you that brewery I owe you. Or you come racing down South. Exeter Tuesday for me.
